SUNY Student Assembly Stands Behind DACA Extension

February 23, 2017 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Tyler McNeil, communications@sunysa.org

“The Student Assembly stands strongly in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Since June 2012, DACA has given countless students the ability to live and study in the United States. As the elected student representatives of SUNY students, we stand firmly in our commitment to making SUNY a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all of our students to live and learn.

“We, as leaders, also have the responsibility to stand up and speak out for what we know is right. We are unwavering in our conviction that extending DACA is in the best interest of our communities, the State University of New York, and our peer institutions across the nation.”

Statement by President Marc J. Cohen on Black History Month

February 16, 2017 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Tyler McNeil, communications@sunysa.org

“Celebrating Black History Month is vital to continuing our progress as a country, state, and University system. The tale of our history as a Student Assembly is tied to the promise of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive education system for all. We applaud the incredible efforts many brave people of color have made to take this promise from a mere dream to our current reality.

“The framework for progress depends on the creators of the frame itself, and the courage, love, and perseverance of these trailblazers should not only be remembered, but reflected in every step we make. From Booker T. Washington to Barack H. Obama, Black educators have helped shape the way we think about our world and our roles in society, and have enriched our lives with their wisdom and humanity. While we take these four weeks each year to recognize these accomplished individuals, we should continue to appreciate their contributions to society throughout the year.”

Student Leaders Call on Senate to Pass DREAM Act, Applaud Assembly’s Initiative

February 13, 2017 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Tyler McNeil, communications@sunysa.org

The SUNY Student Assembly applauds the State Assembly for passing the “DREAM Act” early last week. If approved by the Senate and signed into law by Governor Cuomo, this legislation will benefit the thousands of SUNY students who are undocumented, many of whom were brought to the United States as infants with no say in the matter.

The DREAM Act will allow undocumented New York students the promise of an affordable education, and greater legal protections as they pursue a future in the only country most of them have ever known as home.

This is the fifth time the Assembly has passed a version of the DREAM Act. Each time the Senate has taken no action to move the initiative forward.

We strongly urge the State Senate to finally take up and approve this Act so that all SUNY students can feel safe and secure on their campuses, knowing that they have equal access to all benefits provided to New Yorkers. The Student Assembly stands with our students, and the Senate should too. Top of Form
