UB EERI Club

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) is a national, nonprofit, technical society of engineers, geoscientists, architects, planners, public officials and social scientists (https://www.eeri.org/about-eeri/our-mission/) formed with the objective of:

(1) Advancing the science and practice of earthquake engineering,

(2) Improving understanding of the impact of earthquakes on the physical, social, economic, political, and cultural environment, and

(3) Advocating comprehensive and realistic measures for reducing the harmful effects of earthquakes.

UB-EERI is the local-student chapter of the EERI main body and is recognized as a Special Interest Club by the Graduate Student Association of UB. More information about the club and its past work can be found on our website (http://gsa.buffalo.edu/eeri/).

Earthquakes do not discriminate. All fields of study are somehow concerned with earthquake research. We invite all students to seek interest in mitigating the effects of earthquake damage through their areas of study, including civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, geology, architecture and planning, just to name a few!

There will be an informal open/informational discussion tomorrow, September 1st, at 7 PM in the student lounge at 202 Ketter Hall. Graduate students interested in running for officer positions in the club are highly encouraged to attend.

There are four officer positions in the club: President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.

On Wednesday, September 7th at 12 PM in 140 Ketter Hall we will hold the 2016-2017 UB-EERI Elections for the officer positions. At this election meeting, people interested in EERI membership will be able to obtain and fill out student-membership applications.

Pizza and light refreshments will be served at the election!

FASEB BioArt Competition

FASEB’s fifth annual BioArt competition is underway!  Please encourage life science graduate students and other researchers at your institution to submit the beautiful images and videos they produce as part of everyday research.

The BioArt competition aims to share the beauty and excitement of biological research with the public. Past winning submissions have been displayed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), featured on the NIH Director’s blog, and included in a variety of exhibits.

With three image categories and one video category, there is a place for all types of imaging produced during the course of daily life science research activities – including data visualizations, microscopy, illustrations, and more. BioArt entries must be original creations, and at least one entrant within a group must either receive federal funding or be a member of FASEB constituent society. Submissions are due by August 30th.

For your convenience, feel free to use content from the BioArt Communications Toolkit (available here) in your tweets, Facebook posts, newsletters, and fliers. More information can be found at www.FASEB.org/BioArt.

Pentagon Decision on Transgender Troops

SUNY Student Assembly Leadership Statements Regarding Pentagon Decision to Allow Transgender Troops

Immediate Release: July 30, 2016

Contact: Tyler McNeil, Tyler.McNeil@sunysa.org

SUNY Student Assembly Vice President Bridget Doyle:

“I was absolutely overwhelmed to hear about this historic victory. To see an institution that is commonly perceived as unyielding and rigid take a major step towards gender inclusivity and equity is a ringing endorsement of social progress and the rejection of gender binary norms. To my fellow students who are members of the transgender or gender non-conforming community: today I celebrate with you. This is an example for every single institution in this country: Now is the time to make a change. Let us rid ourselves of the days of exclusive gender policies. It is time for us to decide to judge someone based only upon their merit.”

“In the wake of this monumental decision, I reflect on Laverne Cox’s teachings, ‘I want to encourage each and every one of us to interrogate how we might be an oppressor and how we might be able to become liberators for ourselves and each other.’”

“The LGBT+/MOGII community has been subject to oppression, marginalization and hatred for centuries. It is a unique honor and privilege to live and advocate in a time that is by far the most critical juncture in our history. SUNY students across the state have reason to celebrate today. I’m proud to see our military reflecting American values in its policies.”

SUNY Student Assembly President and SUNY Trustee Marc Cohen:

“SUNY students have been advocating for this and similar issues long before they reached mainstream attention. We are thrilled to see one of our nation’s oldest institutions modernize its social policies.”

SUNY Student Assembly Chair of Military Affairs Lori Mould:

“The US military has taken a progressive leap which gives the transgender community the right to openly serve in the US Armed Forces. These women and men deserve not only the right to serve freely and without fear but to serve with dignity, honor, and respect. We are witnessing history being made, right here and now.”
