Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU) employees can apply now for professional development funds for activity between July 2, 2021, and July 1, 2022. This program is intended to assist eligible teaching assistants and graduate assistants develop their full professional potential or prepare for advancement by funding professional development activities. The next NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) deadline is April 8, 2022. Receiving this nationally prominent award to support biomedical research is an excellent addition to your resume, regardless of what direction your career takes you.

To assist you, SUNY has created a NRSA award slide deck and training video developed and presented by Dr. Miguel Garcia-Diaz, Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Director of the Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology Graduate Program at Stony Brook University.

Please register to watch the training video as a group or to participate in live Q&A webinar session on March 8, 2022 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. You can watch the training video at any time and join us for the Q&A portion around 3:10 pm.  This is an opportunity to ask questions, receive guidance on the application components and discuss any previous reviews you have received.

Most students apply for this award between the end of their third year and the beginning of their fourth year of training. Please talk with your advisor if you are considering applying for this award. Note that if you win one of these prestigious awards, you may be eligible for the SUNY GREAT award, an additional $5K in flexible research funds.

The video and slides will be available throughout the year, and we will schedule Q&A webinars for subsequent application cycles. Please note that the video and related materials may be useful if you apply for other awards or grants.

SUNY PRODiG Fellowship Consortia Application -Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth across the SUNY Comprehensive Sector

The Comprehensive Colleges of the State University of New York system (SUNY) invite applications for the PRODiG Pre/Post-Doctoral Fellowship. The SUNY PRODiG Fellowship Consortia represents a collaborative effort of the thirteen comprehensive colleges in the SUNY system (see below). Eligible candidates for this two-year program include late-stage ABDs or post-docs who are underrepresented minority faculty in general and women faculty of all races in STEM fields.

The focus of the collaborative is to introduce early-career diverse faculty to opportunities at a comprehensive college, and will provide outstanding mentorship and support to increase future success and retention as faculty.  The program will provide intentional support toward degree completion, teaching experience in the individual’s field of expertise, and faculty development at one of the SUNY comprehensive colleges.

PRODiG Fellows will receive a two-year non-renewable contract, travel allowances, summer research stipends, moving expenses, and reduced teaching load. Annual compensation is competitive. Fellows will be paired with a campus senior faculty member to facilitate integration and support, and are part of a larger cohort of PRODiG Fellows across the SUNY system who will meet (both face-to-face and virtually) throughout the two-year fellowship.  The fellowship is open to a wide range of fields.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral program in the U.S. or have completed an accredited doctoral program (or other terminal degree program), and be authorized to work in the U.S. Eligible applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal and have advanced to candidate status at their home institution (or have completed their dissertation or similar terminal degree requirement).  Post-doctoral applicants are also encouraged.  Successful candidates will show evidence of outstanding academic achievement and promise as teachers and scholars. Candidates should have a capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the learning needs of diverse students attending a comprehensive college.

Application review will begin March 11 for rolling admissions. Applicants should submit materials via the SUNY PRODiG Fellow Program website: https://www.suny.edu/prodig/fellowship/.

Application material will include current C.V., and letter of intent describing the applicant’s interest in teaching at a comprehensive college; a letter from the dissertation advisor commenting on the applicant’s performance, potential, and expected time to degree; and a transcript.  Applicants should review the websites below for academic programs and campus locations. Within their letter of intent, applicants should include three to five campus preferences.

Register for the NSF GRFP Workshop Series

The NSF GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited U.S. institutions. The five-year fellowship includes three years of financial support including an annual stipend of $34,000 and a cost of education allowance of $12,000 to the institution. This award is only open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents in a GRFP-supported field.

To be eligible for the NSF GRFP, you must:

  • Be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
  • Intend to pursue a research-based Master’s or Ph.D. program in a GRFP-supported field
  • Be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States  graduate institution, with a US campus, by fall following selection
  • Be at an early stage in your graduate career
  • Have completed no more than one academic year of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent)
  • Graduate students are limited to only one application to the GRFP,  submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate  school

Student Assistant position available in UB Graduate Enrollment Services

Are you looking for a Student Assistant position this semester? Consider the below posting within UB’s Graduate Enrollment Services office!

We are seeking to fill a semester position in the Office of Graduate Enrollment Services. It is anticipated that the employee will devote up to 20 regularly scheduled hours per week to this assignment. The responsibilities of this Student Assistant position will include, but will not be limited to, tasks such as:

  • Providing assistance with various data mining projects in order to learn characteristics (demographics, quality) of yearly applicant pools.
  • Assistance with day-to-day online Slate (graduate online application system) operations – training, application support, technical support, user support documentation
  • Petitions, waivers and score management, including downloading and distribution of electronic GRE and TOEFL scores through an online system, triage and review of transcripts; providing assistance with application fee waiver/deferral processing,
  • Assisting with day-to-day communication with prospective applicants placing an emphasis on enhancing communication with applicants from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Daily communication with prospective applicants and answering general questions regarding graduate school programs at UB.
  • Assistance with the processing of transcripts in the online Slate system, including but not limited to: reviewing submissions, verifying files, and communicating with staff
  • Provide general office support – screening of incoming mail, incoming telephone calls, typing, photocopying, faxing and scanning
  • Projects as assigned to assist GES staff

The incumbent will also be expected to prepare correspondence, assist with basic office duties (answering phones, verifying data, etc.), provide support for database and electronic mailing list management and maintenance, as well as assist with preparations for various Graduate Enrollment Services events. Other administrative and technical tasks may be assigned as appropriate to the skill level of the candidate (i.e., enhanced support of the online application system (imports); data reporting, Slate and others processes).

Applicants for this position must demonstrate exceptional communication skills (oral and written), tact, and diplomacy, reliability and attention to detail. This student assistant position requires effective management of information in terms of ability to handle confidential information, editing content, organization and descriptiveness, as well as effective contact with personnel throughout the University on a regular basis. It is essential that the chosen candidate will be able to learn to use resources (websites, contact lists, on-line and printed information) to maximum effect and efficiency. Other mandatory qualifications include:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat
  • Basic understanding of the workings of a web page
  • High energy level, with the ability to manage multiple time-sensitive tasks with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, plus tact and diplomacy
  • Proven organizational and multi-tasking skills
