HFES Inter-University Workshop

November 15, 2014

Every year we at UB, the University of Waterloo, and the University of Toronto rotate in housing a one- day student human factors conference at one of our campuses called the Inter-University Workshop (IUW). While the human factors program at UB resides within Industrial and Systems Engineering, this field is widely multidisciplinary. The cross-curricular nature of this field makes our workshop an event of interest to graduate students from many departments (e.g. psychology, anthropology, computer science, occupational therapy, exercise science, geography, urban planning, information sciences, media studies, communicative disorders, and the other engineering departments). The purpose of the event is to give students an opportunity to present their work in a friendly, low-pressure forum. It’s a day where they can gain experience in speaking and presenting as well as garner feedback and constructive criticism from their peers, keynote speakers, and attending faculty members. While the day’s events are centered around student presentations, we will also be featuring two keynote speakers, a poster competition, and a networking dinner to follow. The last time we hosted this conference in 2011, we had an attendance of approx. 80 students and faculty from the three universities in addition to several other surrounding institutions: all are welcome. In keeping with the spirit of over a decade’s worth of past conferences, we will not be charging registration fees and therefore in need of external funding.
