The seminar will be open to all interested graduate students and community members, and will focus on training in the techniques and principles of motivational interviewing.  Motivational interviewing is a counseling approach that focuses on facilitating and engaging intrinsic motivation within the client in order to change behavior.  It has been very successful in helping individuals overcome addiction problems, and can be used across many different domains, including private practice, school, and hospitals settings.  Although graduate students often hear about motivational interviewing in class, we are not given any specific training in this technique.  This seminar would engage students across multiple disciplines to learn about and practice using this extremely beneficial, evidence based approach.
