The Slow Roll Buffalo bicycle ride will be coming this Monday, September 5 from approximately 6:30-8:30 through neighborhoods in North Park, Parkside, University Heights, and Kensington-Bailey. The ride starts as LaSalle Station, and will go along major streets including Delaware Ave., Kenmore Ave., Main St., Bailey Ave. and Kensington Ave.

Slow Roll is a community event, and we want residents of the route’s neighborhoods to join us! Please visit our Facebook event page for more information and to register for the ride: https://www.facebook.com/events/321298888211361/

The ride will have a Buffalo Police Department escort, and we will stop car traffic at intersections to allow the ride to pass. This can take 10-15 minutes. We’ll work with drivers to guide them to alternate routes.

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) is a national, nonprofit, technical society of engineers, geoscientists, architects, planners, public officials and social scientists (https://www.eeri.org/about-eeri/our-mission/) formed with the objective of:

(1) Advancing the science and practice of earthquake engineering,

(2) Improving understanding of the impact of earthquakes on the physical, social, economic, political, and cultural environment, and

(3) Advocating comprehensive and realistic measures for reducing the harmful effects of earthquakes.

UB-EERI is the local-student chapter of the EERI main body and is recognized as a Special Interest Club by the Graduate Student Association of UB. More information about the club and its past work can be found on our website (http://gsa.buffalo.edu/eeri/).

Earthquakes do not discriminate. All fields of study are somehow concerned with earthquake research. We invite all students to seek interest in mitigating the effects of earthquake damage through their areas of study, including civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, geology, architecture and planning, just to name a few!

There will be an informal open/informational discussion tomorrow, September 1st, at 7 PM in the student lounge at 202 Ketter Hall. Graduate students interested in running for officer positions in the club are highly encouraged to attend.

There are four officer positions in the club: President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.

On Wednesday, September 7th at 12 PM in 140 Ketter Hall we will hold the 2016-2017 UB-EERI Elections for the officer positions. At this election meeting, people interested in EERI membership will be able to obtain and fill out student-membership applications.

Pizza and light refreshments will be served at the election!

Fall Workshops

FASEB’s fifth annual BioArt competition is underway!  Please encourage life science graduate students and other researchers at your institution to submit the beautiful images and videos they produce as part of everyday research.

The BioArt competition aims to share the beauty and excitement of biological research with the public. Past winning submissions have been displayed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), featured on the NIH Director’s blog, and included in a variety of exhibits.

With three image categories and one video category, there is a place for all types of imaging produced during the course of daily life science research activities – including data visualizations, microscopy, illustrations, and more. BioArt entries must be original creations, and at least one entrant within a group must either receive federal funding or be a member of FASEB constituent society. Submissions are due by August 30^th.

Veterans Wellbeing Study

Researchers in the Affective Science Lab at the University at Buffalo are recruiting participants for the Veterans Wellbeing Study. To be eligible, you must be a Vietnam War veteran and 65 years or older. Participants come to our lab located on UB North Campus (Department of Psychology, Park Hall, Buffalo, NY 14260) for a one-hour session that includes interviews and questionnaires and a short computer task (compensation = $20). If you have physical disability that interferes with your mobility or access, we will see you at your residence or at a nearby veterans institutions when applicable.

The theme is “Who’s Who and Whose Who? Examinations of Conflict and Cohesion Throughout Time”. All disciplines are welcome to submit be that humanities or hard sciences.
