Written by Steffy Thampy, MS MIS ’23:

Deciding which graduate program to attend is a major life decision and you’re bound to have a lot of questions. While UB provides answers to many questions on its FAQs webpage, below are answers to three questions that I had when applying.

Do I need to have technical experience or background for acceptance into the UB MS in MIS program?

In the UB MIS program, you learn a mix of technical and IT management skills. It is always good to have some experience or hands-on knowledge, but even if you don’t, there is nothing to worry about. This program focuses more on developing management skills with real-world applications in tech companies. The technical subjects are focused on the tools that are in demand in the job market; these tools are taught by highly skilled professors who start with the basics and prepare you for projects. One need not worry if he or she doesn’t have some experience in IT, as this is designed in a way that you get a good hands-on understanding of the technical tools and learn through business case studies.

What kinds of roles can I apply to when looking for a job?

The MS in MIS program prepares students to be ready for jobs by focusing on projects and experiences using tools that are in demand in the market. UB also encourages its students and prepares them for certifications that would benefit them while searching for jobs.

The MS in MIS program builds skillsets for the following jobs:

  • Analyst: Data, Business, Marketing, Security
  • Technical and Functional Consultant
  • Architect
  • Product Manager
  • Technical Program Manager
  • Cybersecurity and Auditing

What skills or tools should I learn before coming for this program?

I  suggest having some basic knowledge of SQL. It would help you to understand and cope with the subjects you might take such as data warehousing, database management systems, or data visualization. Working knowledge of SQL could also help when interviewing. Below are the resources you can use to learn SQL:

Bio – I was born in Mumbai, India. I grew up in Mumbai and Bangalore. I was always interested in traveling and exploring new places as a kid. We have a pet dog and he is charming and loving. I completed my undergrad at Mumbai University with a major in Electronics and Telecommunication. After my undergrad, I worked in L&T Infotech as a Sr. Software Engineer and also as an Associate Consultant at KPMG Global Services. I loved my work in both companies and the challenges helped me grow a lot in my experience. After 5+ years of work experience in IT and working on multiple projects and clients, I felt the need to grow my skills in Leadership and Management. During my free time, I like to paint and read. I also enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. I always try to challenge myself to try something which is out of my comfort zone.
