Imagining Robert: My Brother, Madness, and Survival
by Jay Neugeboren. The author, a successful novelist, shares his life with his brother, who struggles with schizophrenia. This is an interesting read about a family member’s perspective about living with a family member with serious mental illness. There was a short one hour film that was produced based on this book, but it seems that it was only available on VHS.
The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression
by Andrew Solomon. This is an account of the author’s personal struggles with major depressive disorder as well as providing some research based information about depression and the treatment of depression. This was a New York Times best seller. Mr. Solomon has since written other books. He also spoke at the APA as the keynote speaker in 2014.
An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness
by Kay Redfield Jamison. The author is a clinical psychologist and professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. This is her personal account of living with bipolar disorder.
The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness
by Elyn R. Saks. The author is a professor of law, psychology, and psychiatry at University of Southern California. This is her account of living with schizophrenia. She has a TED talk up online (Link) and has spoken at the APA.
A Beautiful Mind
by Sylvia Nasar. A biography of John Nash, the 1994 Nobel Prize winner in economics, who suffered from schizophrenia. There is also the widely popular and critically acclaimed movie by the same title.
