Your first winter in Buffalo: A Guide for International Students

Written by Ana Teressa Kamthankar

Buffalo, known for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant community, is famous for its challenging winter. As an international student, I received numerous warnings about the cold, but nothing prepared me for the adventure that Buffalo’s winter turned out to be. Here’s a guide to help fellow international students navigate the winter wonderland of Buffalo:

1. Winter Wardrobe Essentials. The first step in preparing for Buffalo’s winter is investing in the right winter gear. From heavy-duty winter jackets to insulated boots, make sure your wardrobe is equipped to handle the chill temperatures and occasional snowstorms.

2. Snowfall Surprises. The sight of the first snowfall is truly magical. Streets and parks transform into a pristine white canvas, offering a unique and enchanting experience. Embrace the snow; it’s an integral part of Buffalo’s winter charm.

3. Winter Shopping Spree. My winter journey began with a shopping spree at Burlington. Exploring the aisles for the perfect winter jacket became a rite of passage. Take the time to find a jacket that keeps you warm and reflects your style.

4. Mastering the Sidewalk Shuffle. Walking in the snow requires a special technique known as the “sidewalk shuffle.” Invest in reliable winter boots to navigate the snow-covered sidewalks safely. It’s a skill you’ll quickly pick up and share with other winter enthusiasts.

5. Community Bonding over Snow. Shoveling snow is not just a chore, it’s a communal activity in Buffalo. Engage with your neighbors and contribute to the collective effort of keeping walkways clear. It’s an excellent way to bond with the community and make new friends.

6. Local Winter Treats.  Combat the cold with Buffalo’s delightful winter treats. Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate from Tim Horton’s, savor the famous Buffalo chicken wings, and explore local eateries offering comforting winter dishes. It’s a delicious way to stay cozy during the winter months.

As you embark on your Buffalo winter journey, remember that each snowflake brings a unique experience. Embrace the season, connect with the community and discover the warmth and camaraderie that make Buffalo’s winter special.
