Many neighborhoods in Buffalo have experienced persistent environmental contamination and elevated lead levels soils due to historical industrial activity and redlining. The Urban Soil Co-Lab at SUNY at Buffalo aims to expand access to data about local soil contamination to residents in Buffalo.
We have partnered with community based organizations to conduct free soil screenings using a portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) device. The pXRF detects heavy metals that may pose health risks when present in soil.
