Educational Outreach

The Biomedical Engineering Society is an organization developed to spread knowledge of biomedical engineering to both its members and the community. The University at Buffalo student chapter of the society (UB BMES) is accomplishing this mission by providing education outreach to local elementary and middle schools. The education outreach project works to develop 30-45 minute hands-on lesson plans that integrate fundamental STEM concepts and their biomedical applications. For example, our electricity lesson teaches kids how chemical half-cells (batteries) work, how to make a battery from various household objects (potatoes, lemons, etc.), and how the body is also conducting/generating electricity that can be measured in the form of an ECG.
Our goal is to spread knowledge of biomedical engineering to the younger generation in order to get them excited about this new and upcoming field. We are currently able to run a lesson with 2-3 schools per semester and usually work with class sizes of around 30 students.
