About Us

The Speech Physiology Laboratory at University at Buffalo is located on South Campus in Cary Hall. We have a large space for data analysis, a separate noise-dampened room for data collection, and a large space for storage.

Our laboratory collaborates with researchers within the Communicative Disorders and Sciences department at UB as well as several laboratories across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The Speech Physiology Laboratory is equipped with instrumentation to study the respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory speech systems and to understand how these systems work together to support speech production. A RespTrack system is available for the collection of respiratory data. A Cosmed Quark CPET system is used to assess ventilation and energy expenditure during speech and non-speech tasks. A Glottal Enterprises airflow and air pressure system are available for the collection of laryngeal data. High quality microphones (wired and wireless) are used to transduce acoustic signals and assess articulation, voicing, and pausing. The data analysis laboratory is equipped with multiple permanent computer work stations.
