Welcome to the Speech Physiology Lab!

The Speech Physiology Laboratory examines how neurological disorders alter speech production and how the body responds to changes associated with neurological diseases during communication.

A major part of our research includes how treatments to improve speech production alter communication outcomes and physiological support for speech production. We are interested in reducing health disparities and increasing healthcare access through the development of devices and computerized tools for assessment and treatment of neurological speech disorders.

About Us

The Speech Physiology Laboratory at University at Buffalo is located on the South Campus of the University at Buffalo in Cary Hall. Our space is designed to support both research and collaboration, with a dedicated noise dampening room for data collection, data analysis, and equipment storage.

Our laboratory collaborates with researchers within the Communicative Disorders and Sciences department at the University at Buffalo, as well as several laboratories across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. These partnerships allow us to expand the impact of our research worldwide.

Our lab is equipped with instrumentation that studies how different systems of the body contribute to speech production including:

  • Respiratory system (breathing)
  • Laryngeal system (voice production)
  • Articulatory system (movement of the lips, tongue, and jaw)

Some of our key equipment includes:

Our data analysis space includes several computer workstations for our team to efficiently process and interpret research findings.
