Wind energy is a promising source for powering the nodes in wireless sensor networks. The friction associated with the gearboxes in conventional wind generator designs makes them unsuitable for small-scale applications. We have developed a novel nonlinear piezoelectric windmill, which generates 10 times more power than the state of the art piezoelectric windmills of the same size. The design was awarded best hardware award at ASME conference on Smart Materials and the study was published in Renewable Energy.
