Purpose

How We Put CIRCL Values Into Practice:

Using Strengths-Based Approaches

We recognize there is no “standard” person and deficit views only limit our possibilities as humans to learn and grow. We take the time to learn about, appreciate, and benefit from the strengths and wisdom that each of our members brings to collaboration.

Noticing and Changing Systems

“Solutions” that look only at human behavior ignore systemic causes of injustice. We commit to calling out the barriers in the systems that govern how we engage with each other, and designing projects that change those barriers, so that every person can thrive.

Committing to Symmetrical Partnerships

Universities and colleges do harm by imagining themselves above the rest of society in coming up with answers to the problems we must all grapple with. We pledge to be genuine partners with students and equity organizations as we work together to understand, and build, a community for all.

Engaging in Co-Equal Conversations

Whose voices get heard matters to all of us, for it is only through listening to everyone that we can hope to find solutions that will work for and celebrate everyone. We operate on a first-name basis, and give equal air time to all participants in CIRCL spaces.

Participating With and Learning From Each Other

Researchers have earned a bad reputation with the public by sweeping in to collect data from communities, then leaving once they have what they need. We who are university faculty pledge humility and the willingness to learn from and with our students and community partners.

Communicating Clearly

Science is funded by the public, and everyone should be able to understand science. Jargon gets in the way of common understanding. We write brief versions of research and scholarship that are accessible for public audiences. We record ourselves in our personal voices. We share videos that tell meaningful stories.
