Shifting Gears in Education
Communicating Clearly
Mandy Seccia won second place in UB’s three minute thesis contest. This competition requires PhD students to concisely but thoroughly describe the design and implications of their dissertation project in 3 minutes or less. Mandy discussed “Shifting Gears in Education to Limit the Research-Practice Gap.”
Your Bias Hurts Me
Noticing and Changing Systems
Qinghua Chen wrote, directed, and produced the anti-racism film “Your Bias Hurts Me” as part of the Stop Asian Hate movement. Her film has received coverage by Spectrum News.
If I may, I’d like to extend my special thanks to: Dr. Satish K. Tripathi: UB President, for his quotes Dr. Julie Gorlewski, Chair of Learning and Instruction Department, for her encouragement and participation Dr. Claire Cameron, my doctoral advisor, Associate Professor, for her support from Day 1 and participation, and the title of “Your Bias Hurts Me” is her suggestion Dr. Nathan Daun-Barnett, Chair of Educational Leadership and Policy Department, for his tremendous support and participation Mr. Christian Brann, a young and talented pianist who played piano for the film.
Expanding Access
Committing to Symmetrical Partnerships
UB has been awarded $300,000 in federal funding to expand high-speed internet access in Buffalo’s Fruit Belt neighborhood. In the Fruit Belt, more than 70% of households are considered “low connectivity households” that either have no internet or depend on one connection type, such as dial-up.
“It is incredibly important to reach out to members of the Fruit Belt community to reduce the digital divide and educational inequalities. The guidance they can provide will enable us to create greater and more equitable internet and network access, as well as serve as a model for future similar networks to bridge the digital and educational gap,”
