What makes someone a leader, and can anyone become one? These are just a pair of the questions asked on the latest episode of the Manage-A-Bull podcast. Host Anders T. Rosen is joined on the episode by three on-campus leaders who bring unique perspectives on what it’s like to lead as students, as women and in the midst of a difficult and dangerous pandemic. Together, Nil Patel, Elizabeth Lepertine and Assistant Dean Erin O’Brien chat with Anders about the many facets of leadership—from integrity and vulnerability to the power of servant leadership.
As President of the Graduate Management Association, fellow second year classmate Nil Patel gives listeners an insider’s view on how students are leading students as they craft events that fit the socially distanced guidelines at UB. In addition to her role as President, Nil is working on a tripartite of concentrations for the MBA program–Finance, Data Analytics and Consulting. She works part-time at Citibank in the Balance Sheet Substantiation section and is also spending time as a TA for the first year marketing class. With her efforts and work across so many different business disciplines, Nil finds that the best part about the MBA program is the integration of so many different areas of the business world.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lepertine, second year MBA student concentrating in marketing and consulting, also joined in to the podcast to share her experiences guiding students through the LeaderCORE program at the School of Management. As a student assistant for this in-depth certificate program that gives UB MBA students the soft and hard skills necessary to excel as business leaders, Lizzie brings unique knowledge of what it takes to lead—especially in times of instability and uncertainty. Lizzie also welcomes prospective students to campus as an MBA Ambassador and Office Manager in International Student Services, where she has cultivated a deep belief in the power of resilient, compassionate leadership She’s is a passionate, data-driven storyteller, organized project manager, and self-proclaimed City of Buffalo Enthusiast.
Finally, friend of the podcast Assistant Dean Erin O’Brien joins to bring a fresh perspective on what it takes to lead as a university administrator. As a leader in higher education, Assistant Dean O’Brien is faced with myriad challenges of running a large organization in a public institution while working to collaborate and develop relationships across a wide spectrum of constituencies. Throughout, she brings equal amounts, passion, humility, skill, commitment, transparency and focus to her leadership style.
