{"id":88,"date":"2021-04-03T21:37:58","date_gmt":"2021-04-03T21:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/wnypsychologyconference\/?page_id=88"},"modified":"2021-11-30T15:29:56","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:29:56","slug":"tips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/wnypsychologyconference\/tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for Giving Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#1b983e\"><strong>Guidelines for Lightning Talks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You should prepare an approximately 3 minute presentation and reserve 2 minutes for audience questions for a <strong>maximum of 5 minutes total<\/strong><\/li><li>You must follow a <strong>two-slide format<\/strong><ul><li>The first slide is your title slide and should include the following:<ul><li>Title<\/li><li>Presenter <\/li><li>Faculty Advisor<\/li><li>Academic Affiliation<\/li><li>Optional: Acknowledgements<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The second slide is your research content slide <ul><li>The first slide must be a title slide. Do not create two research slides and no title slide. This will not be accepted.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>NO transitions, animations, or multimedia (e.g., audio or video) are allowed<\/li><li>Do NOT use widescreen formatting<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#1b983e\"><strong>Creating an Effective Research Slide<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Keep it simple<ul><li>Don&#8217;t include technical details<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t put too much information on the slide<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Choose an eye-catching visual<ul><li>Pick visuals that help the audience understand your research and its purpose<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Do NOT copy and paste a poster presentation onto a slide <ul><li>You will not have enough time to go through an entire research poster in 3 minutes<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Below are some examples of title slides and research slides<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container Talk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Start and end with why your research is important<ul><li>What problem(s) does your research address?<\/li><li>What would a non-researcher care about this study?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Pick an aspect of the study which you plan to focus on<ul><li>If your presentation is a research study:<ul><li>Briefly give necessary and relevant background<\/li><li>Explain your general approach to the study<\/li><li>Provide findings and relate them to the &#8220;why&#8221; of your study<ul><li>If you do not have data, provide anticipated findings and how they would connect to the &#8220;why&#8221; of your study<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>If your presentation is a literature review:<ul><li>Review relevant literature<\/li><li>Identify and explain gaps in the literature<\/li><li>Optional: Propose interesting areas of future studies<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Most importantly, <strong>PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE<\/strong><ul><li>Practice the timing of your presentation (presenters will be cut off once they reach their maximum time limit)<\/li><li>Practice how you will transition from one idea to the next<\/li><li>Practice speaking clearly and at an appropriate pace<\/li><li>Practice in front of an audience<\/li><li>Practice answering questions that might come up<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#1b983e\"><strong>Guidelines for Oral Presentations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You should prepare an approximately 9 minute presentation and reserve 3 minutes for audience question for a <strong>maximum of 12 minutes total<\/strong><\/li><li>There are no slide limits or restrictions for oral presentations, though it is recommended that you do NOT use a widescreen
