In our work, we identify different forms of multimodal revoicing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/steminteractionlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2023\/04\/mmr-1024x399.png\" alt=\"A teacher repeats and reformulates a student's gesture.\" class=\"wp-image-445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/steminteractionlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2023\/04\/mmr-1024x399.png 1024w, https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/steminteractionlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2023\/04\/mmr-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/steminteractionlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2023\/04\/mmr-768x299.png 768w, https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/steminteractionlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2023\/04\/mmr-1536x598.png 1536w, https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/steminteractionlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/180\/2023\/04\/mmr-2048x797.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">A tutor multimodally revoices a student\u2019s idea about speed by subtly reformulating what she says and refining her gesture to highlight certain aspects of what was depicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>Multimodal revoicing can take many forms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Through multimodal revoicing, teachers can help students connect their initial, embodied understandings of phenomena expressed in gesture (e.g., the feeling of \u201cgoing faster\u201d) with more refined, disciplinary ways of describing those phenomena (e.g., a mathematical definition of faster as greater distance traveled in the same amount of time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">When students share ideas with gesture, teachers can repeat and reformulate those gestures, refining both the imagery and the language used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>Multimodal revoicing in whole-class discussion:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Repeat and broadcast students\u2019 gestures to class:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Teachers repeat students gestures to help make visuo-spatial embodied knowledge students share available to the whole onlooking class<br>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Enhance students\u2019 verbal contributions with gesture:<\/em><\/strong> Teachers repeat what students say, and add gestures to provide a visual or embodied illustration of the concept for the onlooking class that was originally shared by the student only in words<br>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Expand students\u2019 contributions by elaborating their gestures:<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>Teachers repeat what students say and repeat their gestures, but expand on the gestures by elaborating with additional parts or details in gesture for the onlooking class&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Flood, V.
