{"id":25,"date":"2014-12-19T22:44:43","date_gmt":"2014-12-19T22:44:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wpdev.acsu.buffalo.edu\/spplab\/?page_id=25"},"modified":"2026-06-26T22:08:57","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T22:08:57","slug":"front-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/spplab\/","title":{"rendered":"Using the Body to Understand the Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/spplab\/dr-mark-seery\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"31\">Dr. Mark Seery<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s&nbsp;SPP Lab&nbsp;is particularly focused&nbsp;on stress and coping; specifically, understanding the factors that contribute to&nbsp;resilience versus vulnerability to potential stressors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We measure&nbsp;participants\u2019 cardiovascular responses (i.e., blood pressure, heart&nbsp;rate, and&nbsp;how much blood the heart is pumping) during potentially stressful tasks, such&nbsp;as giving a speech, problem solving, and&nbsp;interacting with others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We use these&nbsp;bodily responses as a way to measure participants\u2019 psychological states while&nbsp;they perform the&nbsp;task, without having to interrupt them to ask or depend on&nbsp;them to accurately self-report what they are thinking or feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our&nbsp;current research&nbsp;focuses on three core topics:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Examining when and how high self-esteem serves&nbsp;as a resource versus a&nbsp;vulnerability, and the associated consequences for&nbsp;potentially destructive behavior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Investigating how past experience of&nbsp;adverse&nbsp;life events can contribute to developing a propensity for future&nbsp;resilience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Exploring the role of individuals\u2019 relationships with other people and entities (e.g., romantic partners, social movements, things that inspire awe) in resilience versus vulnerability<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Funding from the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\" target=\"_blank\">National Science Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;has supported this work<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Mark Seery&#8216;s&nbsp;SPP Lab&nbsp;is particularly focused&nbsp;on stress and coping; specifically, understanding the factors that contribute to&nbsp;resilience versus vulnerability to potential stressors.
