Her research interests include gender based violence, global migration and human rights. She is currently conducting research on gender-based violence in Pakistan and NGOs and women and human rights activist&#8217;s strategies to delimit it. \u00a0As Co-director of the Institute for Sustainable Global Engagement at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work, she is also involved in developing research and teaching partnerships with academic institutions and NGOs in India and Pakistan and efforts to internationalize UB&#8217;s social work curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/cubs.buffalo.edu\/Home.html\" href=\"https:\/\/cubs.buffalo.edu\/about-the-director\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-308 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/southasiaatub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2016\/06\/VenuGovindaraju-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"VenuGovindaraju\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Dr. Venu Govindaraju<\/a> is a SUNY Distinguished Professor of\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.cse.buffalo.edu\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cse.buffalo.edu\/\">Computer Science and Engineering<\/a> at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. He received his B-Tech (Honors) from the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.iitkgp.ac.in\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iitkgp.ac.in\/\">Indian Institute of Technology<\/a> (IIT), Kharagpur, and his Ph.D. from UB. He is the founding director of the Center for Unified Biometrics and Sensors. He has authored more than 350 scientific papers and graduated 25 doctoral students. He has been the Principal or Co-principal investigator of projects funded by government and industry for about 60 million dollars, and has steered the OCR community research towards includingIndic scripts in digital library initiatives. Dr Govindaraju is a recipient of the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VTc9zbAL2p4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VTc9zbAL2p4\">IEEE Technical Achievement<\/a> award, and is a fellow of the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/aboutaaas\/fellows\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/aboutaaas\/fellows\/\">AAAS<\/a>, the<a title=\"http:\/\/fellows.acm.org\/fellow_citation.cfm?id=5180419&amp;srt=year&amp;year=2009\" href=\"http:\/\/fellows.acm.org\/fellow_citation.cfm?id=5180419&amp;srt=year&amp;year=2009\">ACM<\/a>, the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.iapr.org\/fellowsandawards\/?ar=2#2004\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iapr.org\/fellowsandawards\/?ar=2#2004\">IAPR<\/a>, and the IEEE.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/cas\/english\/faculty\/faculty_directory\/walter-hakala.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/cas\/english\/faculty\/faculty_directory\/walter-hakala.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-309 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/southasiaatub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2016\/06\/WalterHakala-140x150.png\" alt=\"WalterHakala\" width=\"140\" height=\"150\" \/>Walter Hakala<\/a> is Associate Professor in the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/cas\/english.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/cas\/english.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of English<\/a>\u00a0where he teaches courses on South Asian literature and culture in conjunction with the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.asianstudies.buffalo.edu\/index.shtml\" href=\"http:\/\/asianstudies.buffalo.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asian Studies Program<\/a>. \u00a0He has published work on <a title=\"http:\/\/www.brill.nl\/language-policy-and-language-conflict-afghanistan-and-its-neighbors\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brill.nl\/language-policy-and-language-conflict-afghanistan-and-its-neighbors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">language in Afghanistan<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/login?auth=0&amp;type=summary&amp;url=\/journals\/eighteenth-century_studies\/v047\/47.4.hakala.html\" href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/login?auth=0&amp;type=summary&amp;url=\/journals\/eighteenth-century_studies\/v047\/47.4.hakala.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coffee connoisseurship in eighteenth-century Delhi<\/a>, an <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1017\/S1356186314000480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">early modern medical vocabulary<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ier.sagepub.com\/cgi\/doi\/10.1177\/0019464614550764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debates on the\u00a0authorship of an early Indo-Persian children&#8217;s vocabulary<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1017\/S0026749X14000067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">role of Indians as interpreters during the First Anglo-Afghan War<\/a>. His book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/negotiating-languages\/9780231178303\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Negotiating Languages: Urdu, Hindi, and the Definition of Modern South Asia<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Columbia, 2016),\u00a0provides insight into the forces that turned intimate speech into a potent nationalist politics, intensifying the passions that partitioned the Indian subcontinent.\u00a0His current research explores the emergence of vernacular epigraphy and literacy in South Asia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"title\">\n<h1><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"imgPhoto\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"font-family: 'Source Sans Pro', Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: medium\" src=\"http:\/\/gseweb.gse.buffalo.edu\/ubcms\/photos\/sameerho.jpg\" alt=\"Sameer Honwad\" width=\"165\" height=\"196\" \/><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"facultyprofiledescwrapper\">\n<div class=\"facultyprofilerightdesc\">\n<p class=\"facultyprofiletitle\"><span style=\"font-size: revert\">Sameer Honwad, Assistant Professor in the Department of Learning and Instruction (Graduate School of Education), focuses on environmental decision-making processes and how students merge different knowledge systems to make sustainable environmental decisions pertaining to their everyday life. Her research interests are: economic interventions including microfinance, domestic violence, political violence, genocide, and forgiveness. She is currently working on a project on intergenerational transmission of genocide-related trauma in Bangladesh. Dr. Samina Raja\u2019s research program focuses on understanding the role of planning and policy in building sustainable food systems and healthy communities. She is the Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/foodsystemsplanning.ap.buffalo.edu\/\">Food Systems Planning and Healthy Communities Lab<\/a> (the \u201cFood Lab\u201d) where much of her research unfolds with the engagement and collaboration of an outstanding research team.
