BA Thesis, University of Bamenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EN: This study presents a sociopragmatic analysis of Mashi place names. Mashi is one of the languages spoken in Lower Fungom, a locality in the Menchum Division of the North West Region of Cameroon. Data was collected through oral structured interview and questionnaire with 20 Internally Displaced Mashi native speakers in Bassa \u2013 Douala through which a list of Mashi place names were collected, their meanings and motivations analysed referential and other cognitive meanings of 40 place names were identified by interviewing 20 fluent speakers of Mashi. The Causal theory of Names as proposed by Gareth (1985) and the Frame theory as proposed by Fillmore (1985) were used for data analysis. The findings of the study indicate that Mashi toponyms do have meanings and that Mashi toponyms are motivated by sociolinguistics and cultural factors. The motivations behind the identified to be derived from proper names, derived from pioneer settlers, descriptive of the places, major events, borrowed words and the unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FR: Cette \u00e9tude pr\u00e9sente une analyse sociopragmatique des noms de lieux Mashi. Le Mashi est l&#8217;une des langues parl\u00e9es \u00e0 Lower Fungom, une localit\u00e9 de la division de Menchum, dans la r\u00e9gion du Nord-Ouest du Cameroun. Les donn\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 collect\u00e9es par le biais d&#8217;entretiens oraux structur\u00e9s et d&#8217;un questionnaire aupr\u00e8s de 20 locuteurs natifs du Mashi d\u00e9plac\u00e9s \u00e0 l&#8217;int\u00e9rieur du pays \u00e0 Bassa-Douala, \u00e0 travers lesquels une liste de noms de lieux Mashi a \u00e9t\u00e9 collect\u00e9e, leurs significations et motivations analys\u00e9es. Les significations r\u00e9f\u00e9rentielles et autres significations cognitives de 40 noms de lieux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 identifi\u00e9es en interrogeant 20 locuteurs courants du Mashi. La th\u00e9orie causale des noms telle que propos\u00e9e par Gareth (1985) et la th\u00e9orie du cadre telle que propos\u00e9e par Fillmore (1985) ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9es pour l&#8217;analyse des donn\u00e9es. Les r\u00e9sultats de l&#8217;\u00e9tude indiquent que les toponymes Mashi ont des significations et que les toponymes Mashi sont motiv\u00e9s par des facteurs sociolinguistiques et culturels.
