Masters thesis, University of Buea.

EN: This work explores the multilingual region of Lower Fungom, a rural area in the northwest region of Cameroon. This area traditionally has boasted significantly high rates of multilingualism since pre-colonial times. Using a sociolinguistic survey grounded in both ethnographic and linguistic investigation, the study reveals a detailed picture of the multilingual populace while also demonstrating the importance of gathering data from an ethnographic perspective to reveal the language choices of the region’s inhabitants. They find that social motivations, such as marriage, perceived proximity and similarity, and religion, often explain the high rates of multilingualism in Lower Fungom. Additionally, there is evidence that pre-colonial multilingualism coincided with trade and the search for security in the absence of a lingua franca. The local language ideologies of the Lower Fungom people are motivated towards creating a maximum number of beneficial social networks. Finally, this work revealed that the use of an ethnographic approach allowed researchers to gain a true picture of the sociolinguistic traits of the inhabitants of Lower Fungom.

FR: Ce travail explore le multilinguisme observé dans la région du Bas Fungom, une zone rurale située dans la Région du Nord-Ouest Cameroun.
