Master’s thesis, Catholic University of Cameroon – Bamenda.

EN: This work investigates the community and language of the Fio people, an ethnic group found among the Bum people of Northwest Cameroon. The purpose of this work is fourfold: to determine the causes and processes of the endangerment or disappearance of the Fio language, to investigate the consequences of this loss on the community, to document Fio history, traditions, political systems, and community life, and to identify the role of language loss in the loss of cultural identity. This research uses interviews and observation to gather data on these topics, then applies a comparative analysis both qualitatively and quantitatively. It finds that the major reasons for language loss include a lack of intergenerational transmission, migration, marriage out of the group, proximity to the more dominant Bum group, and socio-economic need. Additionally, the majority of Fio people feel that their language, culture, and identity are closely linked. To them, losing one contributes to negative change in the others. Finally, the Fio people feel despondent about the loss of their language and culture, and wish to regain both.

Spotlight on a Threatened Language: The Fio Language of the Bamenda Grassfields of North western Cameroon.
