PhD disseration. University of Yaounde I.

EN: This work explores multilingualism in the Lower Bafut region, a locality in the Bafut subdivision of the Mezam Division in Northwest Cameroon. The research investigates the ways in which people in this area try to gain social influence through language acquisition. It examines the natural dispositions and prejudices of speakers vis-a-vis the languages they speak or are surrounded by, and states the existence of the languages of Lower Bafut against the pressures of the dominant Bafut culture. A variety of methods are employed in this research, including a sociolinguistic questionnaire, an ethnographic questionnaire, a Global Group Appraisal, Recorded Text Testing, Lexicostatistics, and the Matched-Guise Technique. This work finds that the languages of Mbakong, Butang, Obang, Manta, Buwi, and Otang are not dialects of other languages, but in fact different languages of their own. It also finds that in Lower Bafut, both essentialism and indexicality are present. While prestige is absent in indexical uses of the languages of Lower Bafut, it is present in the essential uses of the languages.

Multilingualism and language ideology: an ethnographically-informed sociolinguistic perspective in the study of linguistic diversity in Lower Bafut, North-West Cameroon.
