PhD Dissertation, University of Yaounde 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EN: This work examines the degree of competences people have of the various languages of Lower Fungom (LF). It seeks to find out (i) how multilingual these people are and (ii) what accounts for these high rates of multilingualism in a relatively very small area like LF. The thesis also tries to find out which of the languages attract more speakers, why and which people are attracted to which languages. Finally, it also determines if it is possible to successfully assess unstandardized languages. Data for the study were obtained with a sociolinguistic questionnaire, the Recorded Text Testing (RTT), used to assess L2 speakers\u2019 competences in the different languages of LF, visual stimuli, and word lists. Results showed that most LF speakers had both passive and active competences in more than two languages. The Fang and Kung languages were widely understood and spoken with males taking the lead in the overall assessment. The RTT was successfully used to assess passive competences. The reasons given for these high rates of multilingualism sharply contrast with those we experience in the urban settings. The reasons for this high rate of multilingualism were for solidarity purposes, blood relations, commercial as well as interceptions in case of danger.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FR: Ce travail examine le degr\u00e9 de comp\u00e9tences des gens dans les diff\u00e9rentes langues du Lower Fungom (LF). Il cherche \u00e0 d\u00e9couvrir (i) \u00e0 quel point ces personnes sont multilingues et (ii) ce qui explique ces taux \u00e9lev\u00e9s de multilinguisme dans une zone relativement tr\u00e8s petite comme LF. La th\u00e8se tente \u00e9galement de d\u00e9couvrir quelles langues attirent le plus de locuteurs, pourquoi et quelles personnes sont attir\u00e9es par quelles langues. Enfin, il d\u00e9termine \u00e9galement s\u2019il est possible d\u2019\u00e9valuer avec succ\u00e8s des langues non standardis\u00e9es. Les donn\u00e9es de l\u2019\u00e9tude ont \u00e9t\u00e9 obtenues \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un questionnaire sociolinguistique, le Recorded Text Testing (RTT), utilis\u00e9 pour \u00e9valuer les comp\u00e9tences des locuteurs de L2 dans les diff\u00e9rentes langues de LF, les stimuli visuels et les listes de mots. Les r\u00e9sultats ont montr\u00e9 que la plupart des locuteurs de langue maternelle poss\u00e9daient des comp\u00e9tences \u00e0 la fois passives et actives dans plus de deux langues. Les langues Fang et Kung \u00e9taient largement comprises et parl\u00e9es, les hommes \u00e9tant en t\u00eate de l&#8217;\u00e9valuation globale. Le RTT a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 avec succ\u00e8s pour \u00e9valuer les comp\u00e9tences passives. Les raisons \u00e9voqu\u00e9es pour expliquer ces taux \u00e9lev\u00e9s de multilinguisme contrastent fortement avec celles que nous connaissons en milieu urbain.
