Published in 1660 by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antoine_Arnauld\">Antoine Arnauld<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claude_Lancelot\">Claude Lancelot<\/a>, it was the linguistic counterpart to the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port-Royal_Logic\">Port-Royal Logic<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(1662), both named after the Port Royal&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jansenist\">Jansenist<\/a>&nbsp;monastery near Paris, where their authors worked. The&nbsp;<em>Grammar<\/em>&nbsp;was heavily influenced by the philosophy of Ren\u00e9 Descartes. It has been seen as historically siginificant in the history of linguistics, and promoted most notably by Noam Chomsky in his book on Cartesian Linguistics, when he was making his case for transformational grammar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The central argument of the&nbsp;<em>Port Royal Grammar<\/em>&nbsp;is that grammatical rules are mental in origin, and inborn, and universal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barnard, Howard (1913).&nbsp;<em>The little schools of Port Royal<\/em>.
