{"id":432,"date":"2024-11-04T19:39:46","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T19:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpdev.acsu.buffalo.edu\/history-of-cds\/?page_id=432"},"modified":"2024-11-04T19:39:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T19:39:46","slug":"hermogenes-of-tarsus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/history-of-cds\/hermogenes-of-tarsus\/","title":{"rendered":"Hermogenes of Tarsus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hermogenes of Tarsus was a Greek rhetorician, surnamed \u201cThe Polisher\u201d who wrote during the reign of Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hermogenes&#8217; treatise <em>On Style<\/em> was considered the most influential treatise on the topic in later antiquity and through Byzantine times. His book was the standard in rhetorical schools through the Renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hermogenes followed the efforts of his predecessors Theophrastus, Cicero, Quintilian and Dionysus of Halicarnassus in trying to clarify the virtues of style.
