In 1762, Lowth published\u00a0<em>A short introduction to English grammar<\/em>. He based his grammar on Latin. This textbook remained in standard usage throughout educational institutions in Britain until the early 20th century. His approach to grammar was prescriptive, emulating Latin structure.
