SUMMARY:Siddhartha Mukherjee ~ Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Free tickets available for graduate students now at the SBI Ticket Offices (221 Student Union and 350 Harriman Hall).  1 per UB ID.\nSiddhartha Mukherjee\nCancer Physician\, Researcher and Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author of “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer” \nSiddhartha Mukherjee is a cancer physician and researcher. He is the author of “The Laws of Medicine” and “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer\,” winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction and the inspiration behind a six-hour television documentary produced by Ken Burns\, which aired on PBS in March 2015. “The Emperor of All Maladies” is a profoundly humane biography of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure\, control\, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. Mukherjee has examined cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision\, a historian’s perspective\, and a biographer’s passion. “The Emperor of All Maladies” provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments and provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer. \nMukherjee is an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University and a staff cancer physician at Columbia University/New York University Presbyterian Hospital. A Rhodes Scholar\, he graduated from Stanford University\, University of Oxford\, and Harvard Medical School. He has published articles in Nature\, The New England Journal of Medicine\, The New York Times\, and The New Republic. \nFor source or more information\, please visit: \n\nhttp://www.simonspeakers.com/SiddarthaMukherjee \nhttp://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/09/books/09mukherjee.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 \n\nLecture Sponsor:

SUMMARY:Socializing Data: Mapping Culture and Governing Cities in the Era of Big Social Media
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nNew sources of geographically referenced “big data” have become central to the perception and governance of cities.  Of particular interest are crowd-sourced contributions from social media that provide key raw material for automatically-coded representations of places (e.g.\, a map based search for amenities on a mobile phone).  This talk reviews the power-laden ways in which social media-derived data represent the cultures of cities as well as the potential/problems in using these data for urban research and decision-making.  The recent style of “smart cities” urban governance\, leverages big data – collected from mobile phones\, social media feeds\, sensors embedded in the built environment\, etc – to rationalize the management of urban areas. This talk documents the historical longevity associated with the central ideas within smart city governance – particular the idea that enough data/information/knowledge can solve society problems. It then critiques the idealized approach to urban governance found both in marketing materials and some criticisms. In contrast to these overly simplistic approaches\, this talk demonstrates how social media data and derived metrics might offer useful insight and policy direction\, while recognizing that the decisions of what is important and possible to record is simultaneously producing the cities that we aim to measure.
