SUMMARY:History GSA ~ Milton Plesur Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Milton Plesur Graduate Conference is a forum for graduate students to share their scholarship with their colleagues\, faculty\, and interested members of the public. This year’s conference is titled “Breaking the Silo: A Celebration of Interdisciplinary Scholarship and Cross-Departmental Conversations.” The process of knowledge production is often isolating and can relegate us to particular silos of thought. To that end\, “Breaking the Silo” is the intentional effort to provide graduate students the opportunity to share their combined intellectual and methodological strengths as scholars in the humanities and social sciences and to celebrate the work of our fellow graduate students. \nThe Plesur Conference is a two-day event. Day 1 kicks off with a keynote speech from Dr. Susan Burch followed by a facilitated discussion. Dr. Burch is an award-winning historian and professor of American Studies at Middlebury College in Vermont. She will be discussing the importance of interdisciplinary scholarship and collaboration as it relates to her work. Refreshments will be provided. \nDay 2 will consist of a series of moderated panels featuring UB graduate student speakers from several departments including history\, English\, gender studies\, Africana and American studies and more! Panels will focus on a wide range of themes\, including but not limited to theoretical interventions in current scholarship\, sovereignty and statehood\, writing as praxis\, and much more! Breakfast and lunch will be provided. \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please contact Alyssa Martin at ajm223@buffalo.edu. \nAll participants must review the GSA’s Safety Acknowledgement and Participant Disclaimer before attending.

SUMMARY:English GSA Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the contact between English and its others\, many anglophone writers have sought to extend the limits of literary form and defamiliarize entrenched linguistic and expressive practices through translation. Recognizing the fraught relationship between languages and cultures\, translation scholarship is energized by questions of (in)fidelity\, authority\, and form. While these questions are not new\, recent approaches render the effort of translation even more explicit. From Wong May’s 2022 re-formatting of T’ang era poems to Ugly Duckling Presse’s experimental book formats\, new methods for presenting translation challenge an author’s authority\, an audience’s fluency\, and the stability of a text as origin from which translators proceed—all while emphasizing the translator’s visible\, creative role. \nThis symposium will synthesize these recent developments and consider the new generative modes of literary production that are evolving through methodologies such as adaptation\, pseudo-translation\, and multi-media translations. These methods highlight problems of translatability and untranslatability. How do we discuss works that explicitly deviate from their source and foreground translation as a practice? What are we talking about when we say “fidelity” or even “original”? How might we do justice to the fraught sense of authority in a translation? And what would it mean to move out of a familiar terminology of translation toward a broader definition? This symposium proposes to approach these questions by examining current methods while speculating possible future directions for translation. Alongside presentations on recent translation developments\, this symposium will also serve as an opportunity to hear recent translation work from a diverse range of languages\, particularly Asian and Western European languages. \nAll participants must review the GSA’s Safety Acknowledgement and Participant Disclaimer before attending.

DESCRIPTION:The tentatively scheduled April 22nd Board of Directors meeting will only be held if the proposed budget does not pass at the April 1st Board of Directors meeting. \nIf necessary\, the meeting will be held online via Zoom.  GSA Board of Directors meetings are open to the public\, but only designated representatives from Departmental and International clubs may vote. Sign-in begins at 6:00pm so that the meeting can begin promptly at 6:30pm. Once the meeting begins no one else will be admitted for attendance purposes. \nPLEASE NOTE: Every club will need to email Stephanie at slfrank@buffalo.edu no later than 12:00pm on Wednesday\, April 22nd with who will be attending the meeting on the club’s behalf so that eligible representatives can be verified in advance.  Once representatives are verified they will be sent the Zoom meeting link and password directly\, along with some instructions on how the meeting will be managed\, in order to be able to participate and vote.  Only previously verified representatives will be admitted to participate in the Zoom meeting. \nFor attendance purposes each Special Interest Club may have one representative participate directly in the Zoom meeting\, but they will not have voting privileges.  Additional special requests for guests and/or speakers to be admitted may be sent to gsa-feedback@buffalo.edu. \nThe meeting will also be live streamed via GSA’s Facebook Page for anyone else that is interested in watching the meeting without voting privileges or an official attendance record\, as meetings are open to the public.
