SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series ~ James Balog
DESCRIPTION:James Balog | Apr. 12\, 2018\n\n\nGlobal Expert on Climate Change and Founder of the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) \n\n\n\nMore About James Balog\n\n\nFor decades\, photographer James Balog has broken new conceptual and artistic ground on one of the most important issues of our era: human modification of our planet’s natural systems. An avid mountaineer with a graduate degree in geography and geomorphology\, Balog is equally at home on a Himalayan peak or a whitewater river\, the African savannah or polar icecaps. Balog has become a global spokesman on the subject of climate change and human impact on the environment. In 2007\, he founded the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS)\, the most wide-ranging\, ground-based\, photographic study of glaciers ever conducted; it integrates art and science giving a “visual voice” to the planet’s changing ecosystems. As a consequence of this historic work\, in 2009\, he served as a U.S./NASA representative at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 15) in Copenhagen. In 2015\, at COP 21 in Paris\, he made numerous presentations on behalf of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)\, The United Nations Foundation and Solutions COP 21 at the Grand Palais. \nBalog and the EIS team were featured in the 2012 internationally acclaimed\, award–winning documentary “Chasing Ice” and in the 2009 PBS “NOVA” special “Extreme Ice.” “Chasing Ice” won an Emmy Award in 2014 and was short-listed for an Oscar. It has been screened at the White House\, in the U.S. Congress\, in the U.K. House of Commons and at the United Nations. It has been the subject of features on “NBC Nightly News\,” “ABC Nightline\,” “The Late Show with David Letterman\,” PBS’s “Moyers & Company\,” and “Real Time with Bill Maher.” National Geographic showcased the Extreme Ice Survey in 2007\, 2010 and 2013. \nBalog has given multimedia presentations about the project at TED and at dozens of major institutions including the White House\, the U.S. Congress\, NASA\, the Environmental Protection Agency\, Apple\, Swarovski\, the 2010 Winter Olympics\, North Face\, Qualcomm\, the Bloomberg New Energy Financial Summit\, Cornell University and Duke University. Balog was a keynote speaker at an environmental philosophy conference in Istanbul sponsored by the Ecumenical Patriarch of the 300 million-member Orthodox Church. \nBalog has been honored with many awards. In recent years these include the Royal Photographic Society Hood Medal\, the Heinz Award\, the Duke University LEAF Award\, the Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Walters Prize for Global Environmental Activism at Dickinson College\, an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the University of Alberta\, the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) League Award and the American Geophysical Union Presidential Citation for Science and Society. \nThe most recent of Balog’s eight books is “ICE: Portraits of Vanishing Glaciers\,” published by Rizzoli in 2012. Among his other titles are “Tree: A New Vision of the American Forest” (2004) and “Survivors: A New Vision of Endangered Wildlife” (1990)\, hailed as a major conceptual breakthrough in environmental photography. His work is in dozens of public and private art collections\, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, the Corcoran Gallery\, the Peabody Essex Museum\, the Denver Art Museum\, and the Gilman Paper Company. \n\n\n\n\nFor source or more information\, please visit:\n\n\n\n\n\n http://jamesbalog.com/about-james/ \n\n\n http://earthvisioninstitute.org/ \n\n\n http://extremeicesurvey.org/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLecture Sponsor(s)\n\n\n\n\n\n UB College of Arts & Sciences

SUMMARY:Annual Symposium on Job and Career Perspectives for Students in Computational Sciences
DESCRIPTION:This is an ‘Annual Symposium on Job and Career Perspectives for Students in the Computational Sciences’\, in which we are inviting five people from the industry to give us an insight into their careers\, describe the state of the art technology and computational tools they use in the industry today and how they achieved success in their fields. These speakers will describe the computational work they did in graduate school and how they searched for jobs after it. They will discuss their transition from academia and provide a firsthand account of the computational R&D landscape. This symposium will encourage and inspire students working in computational groups from different departments at UB and will improve their job perspectives.

SUMMARY:Gender Institute presents Amber Jamilla Musser
DESCRIPTION:The UB Gender Institute and the HI Queer Studies Research Workshop are pleased to announce Amber Jamilla Musser \n“Working Around the Incommensurate: Brown Jouissance and Kara Walker’s A Subtlety” \nThursday April 19.\n3:30pm\n120 Clemens Hall\, UB North campus \nhttp://www.buffalo.edu/genderin/news-and-events/upcoming_events/featured-events.html \nAbout Amber Jamilla Musser: \nAmber Jamilla Musser is an Associate Professor or Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research is at the intersection of race\, gender\, and sexuality studies. Her monograph\, Sensational Flesh: Race\, Power\, and Masochism (NYU Press\, 2014) uses masochism as a lens to theorize different felt relationships to power. The book beings together debates on masochism within feminism\, discussions of masochism from psychoanalysis and critiques of colonialism\, literary presentations of masochism\, and performance and visual art that draws on masochism’s repertoire in order to make an argument about the relationship between sensation and knowledge production and the racialization of our current episteme of sexuality. Her current research project\, “Brown Jouissance: Feminine Imaginings” uses women of color’s aesthetic labors to re-imagine epistemologies of sexuality so that they center brown femininity. \nDr. Musser has also published widely on race and critical theory\, queer femininities and race\, race and sexuality\, and queer of color critique. She has an MSt in Women’s Studies from Oxford University and received her PhD in History of Science from Harvard University. She has previously taught gender studies at New York University and Brown University. At Washington University she teaches “Sexuality and the State\,” “Advanced Queer Theory: Intimacies of Precarity\,” “The Politics of Pleasure\,” “Queer of Color Critique: Sense and Sexuality\,” and “Feminist Theory.”

SUMMARY:Restorative Justice Day
DESCRIPTION:Restorative Justice Day is an annual event co-sponsored by the School of Social Work\, the Graduate School of Education\, and several community organizations.  The day focuses on restorative practices\, which are a set of approaches to education and the criminal justice system.  The restorative approach emphasizes restoring the relationships that are broken when harm has occurred\, as opposed to simply punishing the offender.  RJ Day brings together both local and national voices in the restorative movement\, and gives students\, faculty\, and community members a chance to discuss issues such as the role of police\, issues of youth\, building stronger\, more diverse communities\, and zero-tolerance policies in schools.
