SUMMARY:Social Work GSA ~ Restorative Justice Day
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will be open to all interested graduate students and community members\, and will focus on training in the techniques and principles of restorative justice.  Restorative Justice Practices help to build healthy communities\, increase social capital\, reduce the impact of crime\, decrease antisocial behavior\, repair harm\, and restore relationships.  Restorative justice serves as an alternative to retributive systems\, with a focus on engaging all stakeholders to repair harm through accountability\, safety\, and competency.  Restorative Justice Practices in schools and in the juvenile justice system have been known to produce a higher success rate in the areas of victim and offender satisfaction\, restitution compliance\, and reduced recidivism compared to our typical system of retributive justice.  As a result\, Restorative Practices are increasingly being used throughout the country.  This seminar would engage students across multiple disciplines to learn about and practice using this extremely beneficial\, evidence based approach.

SUMMARY:CSEP GSA ~ Motivational Interviewing Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The seminar will be open to all interested graduate students and community members\, and will focus on training in the techniques and principles of motivational interviewing.  Motivational interviewing is a counseling approach that focuses on facilitating and engaging intrinsic motivation within the client in order to change behavior.  It has been very successful in helping individuals overcome addiction problems\, and can be used across many different domains\, including private practice\, school\, and hospitals settings.  Although graduate students often hear about motivational interviewing in class\, we are not given any specific training in this technique.  This seminar would engage students across multiple disciplines to learn about and practice using this extremely beneficial\, evidence based approach.

SUMMARY:Brandon Stanton ~ Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Brandon Stanton | April 29\, 2017\nFree tickets available for graduate students April 20th at the SBI Ticket Offices (221 Student Union and 350 Harriman Hall).  1 per UB ID. \n\n\nPhotographer\, Author and Creator of Humans of New York (HONY)\nUndergraduate Student Choice Speaker \n\n\n\nMore About Brandon Stanton\n\n\nAs the founder of the street portrait blog\, Humans of New York (HONY)\, Brandon Stanton is referred to as a worldwide Internet phenomenon and one of today’s most influential storytellers. HONY has amassed over 17.7 million followers on Facebook and 6.8 million followers on Instagram\, numbers which illustrate the power of the Internet\, the value of storytelling\, and our desire to remain connected with real people in a tech-driven world. \nStanton’s gift for storytelling has also resulted in two best-selling books\, “Humans of New York” (2013)\, which spent 45 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list\, and “Humans of New York: Stories\,” which shot to number one on the Time’s bestseller list within two weeks of its October 2015 release.  On stage\, he candidly shares his own personal story\, and the perspective he has gained since embarking on his journey to help others tell theirs.  He inspires his audiences with a renewed appreciation for the power of one person and one idea to inspire millions\, and motivates them to contribute something meaningful to the world. \nAfter graduating with a degree in history\, Stanton traded bonds in Chicago until he lost his job\, which led him to move to New York. In 2010\, he started Humans of New York. \n“The initial goal was to photograph 10\,000 New Yorkers on the street\, and create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants.  Somewhere along the way\, I began to interview my subjects in addition to photographing them. And alongside their portraits\, I’d include quotes and short stories from their lives.” \nTaken together\, these portraits and captions became the subject of a vibrant blog which now provides a worldwide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers on the streets of New York City.  Over the past five years\, it has also expanded to feature stories from over twenty different countries. \n\n\nFor source or more information\, please visit:\n\n\n\n\n Agency Listing \n\n\n\nLecture Sponsor(s)\n\n\n\n\n Undergraduate Student Association

SUMMARY:Pharmaceutical Sciences GSA ~ 13th Annual Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The “13th Annual Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Symposium” is an all-day event in which graduate students have the opportunity to meet with a prominent alumna/alumnus from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.  This year we are pleased to announce Dr. Holly Kimko as the distinguished alumna.  Dr. Kimko is a Scientific Director and Janssen Fellow at Janssen Research and Development of Johnson & Johnson from the Global Clinical Pharmacology Department.  During this all-day event\, graduate students will be invited to engage in a career development lunch with the keynote speaker\, as well as have the opportunity to meet Dr. Kimko one-on-one to discuss research\, network\, and learn about opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry.  The day-long event will conclude with a keynote speech from Dr. Kimko entitled “How Does Modeling & Simulation Support Totality of Evidence for Regulatory Decisions?’  The keynote speech will be of interest to a variety of disciplines including\, but not limited to Biological Sciences\, Pharmacy\, RPCI\, Pharmacology & Toxicology\, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.  We firmly believe that providing graduate students with the opportunity to meet a distinguished alumna will enhance their graduate student experience and inspire them to strive for similar success.  A detailed description of the event will be advertised appropriately such that any interested person at the university might benefit from the event.  The GSA will be visibly acknowledged as a cosponsor of the event.

DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 12th from 4-7pm we will be hosting the 4th annual Interdisciplinary Social Science and Humanities Symposium.  This year it is based on forming collaborative research projects with graduate students on social and environmental issues in the Buffalo region\, such as drinking water quality and income inequality in our community.  Dinner will be provided\, and there will be a keynote panel consisting of professors from several departments. After the panel\, there will be a roundtable session connecting students from different disciplines that have similar research interests. \nGraduate students at any stage in the process should definitely come.  Even if you are just thinking through your thesis or dissertation idea\, it is never too early to work with other researchers on collaborative projects\, or hear about what students in other disciplines are studying.  Plus\, the keynote panel will be a great source of information. \nTake a look at the description below\, and please sign up!  There is just a short google form that you need to fill out to RSVP: http://goo.gl/forms/0Gmmra0SJ8 \nLet us know if you have any questions (zhasmina@buffalo.edu)\, and I hope to see you there! \nInterdisciplinary Social Science and Humanities Symposium \nSymposium Title:  Socially Responsible Research: Ideas and Directions \nDate: Friday\, May 12th\, from 4:00m to 7:00pm (Dinner will be provided) \nLocation: Jacobs 103 \nDescription:  The Symposium will consist of a keynote panel and one roundtable session.  The keynote will be a panel of professors that have experience doing socially responsible research in different disciplines.  They will share their insights about this process and answer questions from the graduate students in attendance. This panel will then be followed by a roundtable session where students in different disciplines will meet based on similar substantive interests to find potential connections for collaborative research projects. \n103 Jacobs Management Center\nUniversity at Buffalo\, Buffalo\, NY 14228\, Buffalo\, NY \n\nRSVP TO EVENT\nADD TO MS OUTLOOK / ICAL\nADD TO GOOGLE CALENDAR\nVIEW RSVP’S\nWEATHER
