SUMMARY:Body Image\, Hunger\, and Difficult Women: Reading Roxane Gay
DESCRIPTION:Body Image\, Hunger\, and Difficult Women: Reading Roxane Gay  \nTue. Mar 28:   12:00-1:30 pm\, 210 SU\, The Landmark Room\, UB North    \nFree & Open to the Public \nPlease join us for a panel discussion as a prelude to the lecture by Roxane Gay\, UB Distinguished Speaker on April 5th. \nRoxane Gay is an author and cultural critic whose writing is unmatched and widely revered. Her work garners international acclaim for its reflective\, no-holds-barred exploration of feminism and social criticism. With a deft eye on modern culture\, she brilliantly critiques its ebb and flow with both wit and ferocity. Words like “courage\,” “humor\,” and “smart” are frequently deployed when describing Gay. Her collection of essays\, “Bad Feminist\,” was a New York Times best-seller and is universally considered the quintessential exploration of modern feminism. NPR named it one of the best books of the year and Salon declared the book “trailblazing.” Her powerful debut novel\, “An Untamed State\,” was long listed for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize. She has two upcoming releases–“Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body” is a painstaking examination of body image\, and “Difficult Women” is a collection of stories. \nSponsored by the Graduate Student Association\, UB Wellness Education\, UB Gender Institute: Sex\, Gender\, Health Committee.  Lunch will be served.

SUMMARY:RLL Symposium ~ Intersections: Collage of Urban Networks
DESCRIPTION:The City provides with a unique opportunity to create and be created in many different ways.  Identities and cultures become an indentifying marker against a backdrop of individuality.  Against the backdrop of skyscrapers\, new opportunities are born.  In these intersections paintings\, literature\, architecture\, and performance\, amongst many other mediums we find a complex\, multi-faceted and often fragmented collage of cultures forming a snapshot of human existence.  Intersections serve as a reminder of where humanity becomes a cosmopolitan endeavor.  At our conference we will discuss these connections.

Her work garners international acclaim for its reflective\, no-holds-barred exploration of feminism and social criticism. With a deft eye on modern culture\, she brilliantly critiques its ebb and flow with both wit and ferocity. \nWords like “courage\,” “humor\,” and “smart” are frequently deployed when describing Gay. \nGay is a contributing op-ed writer for The New York Times. She was a founding editor of PANK and non-fiction editor at The Rumpus.
