SUMMARY:Eric H. Holder\, Jr. ~ Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Eric H. Holder\, Jr. | Feb. 16\, 2017\n\n\n82nd Attorney General of the United States (2009-15)\nUB’s 41st Annual Martin Luther King\, Jr. Commemoration Keynote Speaker \n\n\n\nFree tickets available for graduate students starting January 30th at the SBI Ticket Offices (221 Student Union and 350 Harriman Hall).  1 per UB ID.\nMore About Eric H. Holder\, Jr.\n\n\nEric H. Holder\, Jr. was born in New York City and attended public schools there\, graduating from Stuyvesant High School\, before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in American History from Columbia College in 1973 and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School in 1976. \nUpon his graduation from law school\, Holder joined the Department of Justice through the Attorney General’s Honors Program. He was assigned to the newly formed Public Integrity Section\, where he investigated and prosecuted corruption involving officials in local\, state and federal government. In 1988\, President Ronald Reagan appointed Holder to serve as an associate judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia\, where he presided over hundreds of criminal and civil trials during his five years on the bench. In 1993\, President Bill Clinton appointed Holder to serve as the United States attorney for the District of Columbia. In 1997\, President Clinton appointed Holder to serve as Deputy Attorney General of the United States\, a position that he held until the end of the Clinton Administration. He was the first African-American to serve as Deputy Attorney General and United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. At the request of President George W. Bush\, Holder served as Acting Attorney General in 2001 pending the confirmation of Attorney General John Ashcroft. \nIn July 2001\, Holder joined the Washington\, D.C.\, law firm of Covington & Burling as a partner in the firm’s litigation practice group\, where he represented clients in complex civil and criminal cases as well as internal corporate investigations. \nPresident Barack Obama nominated Holder to be Attorney General and the United States Senate confirmed his nomination on February 2\, 2009. Holder began his service as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States the following day. He was the first African-American to serve in that position. He remained in office until April 27\, 2015\, becoming the third-longest-serving Attorney General in the nation’s history. \nWhile Attorney General\, Holder oversaw the government’s efforts to address many critically important issues arising at the intersection of law and public policy\, including national security investigations and prosecutions; landmark antitrust\, environmental\, fraud and tax cases; the defense of voting rights and marriage equality; and reform of the federal criminal justice system. In 2014\, TIME magazine named Holder to its list of “100 Most Influential People\,” stating that he “worked tirelessly to ensure equal justice.” \nAfter his departure from the Department of Justice\, Holder returned to Covington & Burling and is resident in their Washington office. He focuses on complex litigation and investigatory matters that are international in scope and raise significant enforcement issues and substantial reputational concerns. \nHolder’s many civic commitments have included service on the boards of Columbia University\, the National Center for Victims of Crime\, the Meyer Foundation and the Save the Children Foundation\, among many others. He also served on the U.S. Sentencing Commission Ad Hoc Advisory Group. \nHolder has received numerous awards and honorary degrees in recognition of his professional and civic contributions\, including the NAACP Chairman’s Award\, the Department of Justice’s John F. Keeney Award\, the District of Columbia Bar Association’s Beatrice Rosenberg Award\, George Washington University’s Martin Luther King\, Jr. Medal for Outstanding Service in Human Rights\, and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights’ Robert F. Kennedy Justice Prize. The District of Columbia Bar Association has recognized Holder as its “Lawyer of the Year\,” and in 2008\, the Legal Times named him as one of the “Greatest Washington Lawyers of the Past 30 Years.” \n\n\nFor source or more information\, please visit:\n\n\n\n\n Agency Listing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLecture Sponsor(s)\n\n\n\n\n Minority Faculty & Staff Association

SUMMARY:Nonviolence Training ~ Social Work GSA
DESCRIPTION:The School of Social Work GSA is a cosponsor to this day-long training in the theory and practice of nonviolence on Saturday\, March 11th from 9am-4pm in the Student Union (room 145). It is a unique opportunity for students\, staff\, and faculty to engage together and develop useful tools to address various issues on campus as a community. \nThe training which will be led by two certified nonviolence trainers from a non-profit organization called Something New. Something New was originally based in Selma\, Alabama\, and has been engaging in community building and social justice work for over ten years. We are so excited to be able to bring these trainers to UB\, and would love to extend the invitation to as many students and faculty as possible. \n“WHAT WE ARE UP AGAINST – Prejudice\, Bias\, Oppression\, Hate\, Fear\, Instability & Violence is all around us and we must come together to “Build Community” \nNew Way’s goal is simple: We train people how to effectively and peacefully handle internal and external conflict. Building on the principles of Gandhi\, Mandela\, and Dr. King\, the nonviolence method to conflict reconciliation can be powerfully applied to any setting\, any issue\, or any relationship. It has proven successful in all kinds of settings from national power struggles\, to prisons\, to corporations and to college campuses. Whether the end is disciplined practice of the principles of nonviolence in a hostile setting\, the ability to facilitate dialogue among people with different values and priorities\, or some other expression of peacemaking\, this training provides an important first step. You’ll engage in personal reflection\, become closer with team members\, and walk away more self-aware. \n“If one does not practice nonviolence in one’s personal relations with others and hopes to use it in bigger affairs\, one is vastly mistaken.” – Gandhi” \nPlease distribute the attached flyer to your students/networks. RSVP for the training event to medepetr@buffalo.edu or delaneyd@buffalo.edu by March 4th.

SUMMARY:Body Image\, Hunger\, and Difficult Women: Reading Roxane Gay
DESCRIPTION:Body Image\, Hunger\, and Difficult Women: Reading Roxane Gay  \nTue. Mar 28:   12:00-1:30 pm\, 210 SU\, The Landmark Room\, UB North    \nFree & Open to the Public \nPlease join us for a panel discussion as a prelude to the lecture by Roxane Gay\, UB Distinguished Speaker on April 5th. \nRoxane Gay is an author and cultural critic whose writing is unmatched and widely revered. Her work garners international acclaim for its reflective\, no-holds-barred exploration of feminism and social criticism. With a deft eye on modern culture\, she brilliantly critiques its ebb and flow with both wit and ferocity. Words like “courage\,” “humor\,” and “smart” are frequently deployed when describing Gay. Her collection of essays\, “Bad Feminist\,” was a New York Times best-seller and is universally considered the quintessential exploration of modern feminism. NPR named it one of the best books of the year and Salon declared the book “trailblazing.” Her powerful debut novel\, “An Untamed State\,” was long listed for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize. She has two upcoming releases–“Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body” is a painstaking examination of body image\, and “Difficult Women” is a collection of stories. \nSponsored by the Graduate Student Association\, UB Wellness Education\, UB Gender Institute: Sex\, Gender\, Health Committee.  Lunch will be served.
