SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series ~ Yusef Salaam
DESCRIPTION:Yusef Salaam | Feb. 24 | Alumni Arena\n\n\nCriminal Justice Advocate and Member of the Central Park Five \nFree tickets will be available for graduate students to reserve online as of February 9th.  1 per UB ID. Tickets will be available for pickup at the UB Ticket Office (221 Student Union) on February 12th.  As of February 24th any tickets still available will be given away to any UB GSA student (regardless if they have reserved it online) at the UB Ticket Office until 3pm.  After that\, any remaining tickets will be available at the door. \n*PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PICK UP YOUR PHYSICAL TICKET(S) FROM THE UB TICKET OFFICE IN 221 STUDENT UNION.  THE EMAILED TICKET IS ONLY A VOUCHER AND WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR ADMISSION BY THE VENDOR. \n  \n\n\nUB’s 44th Annual Martin Luther King\, Jr. Commemoration Keynote Speaker\n\n\n\nMore About Yusef Salaam\n\n\nOn April 19\, 1989\, a young woman was brutally raped and left for dead in New York City’s Central Park. Five boys—four black and one Latino—were tried and convicted of the crime in a frenzied case that rocked the city. They became known collectively as the Central Park Five. \nTheir convictions were vacated in 2002 after spending between seven and thirteen years of their lives behind bars. The unidentified DNA in the Central Park jogger case\, unlinked to any of the five\, had finally met its owner\, a convicted murderer and serial rapist who confessed. The convictions of the boys\, now men\, were overturned and they were exonerated. One of those boys\, Yusef Salaam\, was just 15 years old when his life was upended and changed forever. \nSince his release\, Salaam has committed himself to advocating and educating people on the issues of false confessions\, police brutality and misconduct\, press ethics and bias\, race and law\, and the disparities in America’s criminal justice system. In 2013\, Ken and Sarah Burns and David McMahon released the documentary “The Central Park Five\,” which told of this travesty from the perspective of Salaam and his cohorts. \nIn 2014\, the Central Park Five received a multi-million dollar settlement from the city of New York for its grievous injustice against them. Salaam was awarded an honorary doctorate that same year and received the President’s Life Time Achievement Award in 2016 from President Barack Obama. \nIn 2018\, he was appointed to the board of the Innocence Project. In May 2019\, Netflix released the limited series titled “When They See Us” based on the true story of Salaam and the other members of the Central Park Five. The series was created and directed by Ava DuVernay; executive producers included Oprah Winfrey and Robert De Niro.

SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series ~ Angela Davis
DESCRIPTION:Angela Davis | Feb. 27 | Alumni Arena\nFree tickets will be available for graduate students starting on February 18th at the SBI Ticket Offices (221 Student Union and 135 Diefendorf Hall).  1 per UB ID. \n\n\nLegendary Human Rights Activist and Author \n\n\nUB’s 43rd Annual Martin Luther King\, Jr. Commemoration Keynote Speaker\n\n\nGraduate Student Choice Speaker\n\n\n\n\nMore About Angela Davis\n\n\nThrough her activism and scholarship over many decades\, Angela Davis\, PhD\, has been deeply involved in movements for social justice around the world. Her work as an educator – both at the university level and in the larger public sphere – has always emphasized the importance of building communities of struggle for economic\, racial and gender justice. Davis’ teaching career has taken her to San Francisco State University\, Mills College and UC Berkeley. She has also taught at UCLA\, Vassar\, Syracuse University\, the Claremont Colleges\, and Stanford University. At the University of California Santa Cruz she is Distinguished Professor Emerita of History of Consciousness – an interdisciplinary PhD program – and of Feminist Studies. \nDavis has lectured throughout the United States as well as in Europe\, Africa\, Asia\, Australia\, and the Caribbean. In recent years a persistent theme of her work has been the range of social problems associated with incarceration and the generalized criminalization of those communities that are most affected by poverty and racial discrimination. She draws upon her own experiences in the early seventies as a person who spent 18 months in jail and on trial\, after being placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted List.” She also has conducted extensive research on numerous issues related to race\, gender and imprisonment. \nDavis has authored numerous books including ““Abolition Democracy” and “Are Prisons Obsolete?” about the abolition of the prison industrial complex\, a new edition of “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass\, and two collections of essays titled “The Meaning of Freedom” and “Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson\, Palestine\, and the Foundations of a Movement.” \nDavis is a founding member of Critical Resistance\, a national organization dedicated to the dismantling of the prison industrial complex. Internationally\, she is affiliated with Sisters Inside\, an abolitionist organization based in Queensland\, Australia that works in solidarity with women in prison. Like many educators\, Davis is especially concerned with the general tendency to devote more resources and attention to the prison system than to educational institutions. Having helped to popularize the notion of a “prison industrial complex\,” she now urges her audiences to think seriously about the future possibility of a world without prisons and to help forge a 21st century abolitionist movement. \n\n\n\n\nFor source or more information\, please visit:\n\n\n\n\n https://www.kepplerspeakers.com

SUMMARY:Chipotle Fundraiser for Haiti Medical Mission
DESCRIPTION:Each year a group medical students from UB go on a medical mission trip to Fontaine\, Haiti for Spring Break. We set up a clinic to provide physical exams\, pre-natal\, and gynecological care. During the week there\, we are able to see about 600 patients. This trip is biannual\, and provides continuity of medical care to a rural area of Haiti. \nWe need to raise money to pay for medications\, supplies\, and some hospital fees for patients who need a higher level of care.
