SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series presents Nikole Hannah-Jones
DESCRIPTION:Nikole Hannah-Jones\n\n\nPulitzer Prize-Winning Creator of “The 1619 Project” | New York Times Magazine Staff Writer \n\n\nANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING\, JR. COMMEMORATION KETNOTE SPEAKER \nFree tickets available for graduate students starting February 1st at 9:00am online through the UB Ticket Office.  1 per UB ID. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWed.\, Feb. 16\, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.\nCenter for the Arts\, UB’s North Campus \n\n\nPresented in part by\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About Nikole Hannah-Jones\n\n\nNikole Hannah-Jones is a MacArthur Genius for “reshaping national conversations around education reform.” This is but one honor in a growing list: She is the creator of the New York Times Magazine’s “The 1619 Project\,” about the history and lasting legacy of American slavery\, for which her powerful introductory essay was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. She’s also won a Peabody\, two George Polk awards\, and the National Magazine Award three times. \nNikole Hannah-Jones covers racial injustice for The New York Times Magazine\, and has spent years chronicling the way official policy has created—and maintains—racial segregation in housing and schools. Her deeply personal reports on the Black experience in America offer a compelling case for greater equity.  Hannah-Jones is the creator and lead writer of the New York Times’ major multimedia initiative\, “The 1619 Project.” Named for the year the first enslaved Africans arrived in America\, the project features an ongoing series of essays and art on the relationship between slavery and everything from social infrastructure and segregation\, to music and sugar—all by Black American authors\, activists\, journalists and more. Hannah-Jones wrote the project’s introductory essay\, which ran under the powerful headline “Our Democracy’s Founding Ideals Were False When They Were Written. Black Americans Have Fought to Make Them True.” The essay earned Hannah-Jones her first Pulitzer Prize\, for commentary. Random House has also announced it will be adapting the project into a graphic novel and four publications for young readers\, while also releasing an extended version of the original publication\, including more essays\, fiction\, and poetry. Two of these\, “The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story” and “Born On The Water” will be released in November 2021. \nHannah-Jones has written extensively on the history of racism\, school resegregation\, and the disarray of hundreds of desegregation orders\, as well as the decades-long failure of the federal government to enforce the landmark 1968 Fair Housing Act. She is currently writing a book on school segregation called “The Problem We All Live With\,” to be published on the One World imprint of Penguin/Random House. Her piece “Worlds Apart” in The New York Times Magazine won the National Magazine Award for “journalism that illuminates issues of national importance” as well as the Hillman Prize for Magazine Journalism. In 2016\, she was awarded a Peabody Award and George Polk Award for radio reporting for her “This American Life” story\, “The Problem We All Live With.” She was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists\, and was also named to 2019’s The Root 100 as well as Essence’s Woke 100. Her reporting has also won Deadline Club Awards\, Online Journalism Awards\, the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service\, the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting\, and the Emerson College President’s Award for Civic Leadership. In February 2020\, she was profiled by Essence as part of their Black History Month series\, celebrating “the accomplishments made by those in the past\, as well as those paving the way for the future.” \nHannah-Jones co-founded the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting with the goal of increasing the number of reporters and editors of color. She holds a master of arts in mass communication from the University of North Carolina and earned her bachelor of arts in history and African-American studies from the University of Notre Dame.

SUMMARY:Financial Self-Care: Your Relationship with Money
DESCRIPTION:Many of us associate the concept of self-care with elements of consumerism (e.g.\, retail therapy) but we don’t always have a good sense of our own relationship with money and where it all started. Our relationship with money is complex\, endures a lifetime\, and it can lead to behaviors that do not always serve us well. \nBased on decades of research and common sense principles\, this talk explores common traps many of us fall into that get in the way of achieving real financial security and stability. It will reframe the idea of what wealth actually is and also identify some of the unique challenges for women in regard to money through the lifespan. We will also highlight important on-campus resources that promote professional development\, financial well-being\, and self-care for UB’s graduate students. This presentation is in collaboration with the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center\, the Graduate School\, and Health Promotion’s Financial/Wellness Coaching Programs. \n* Note: to attend this program online\, you will need to sign-in to Zoom using your UBIT name and password \nJoin us online: https://buffalo.zoom.us/j/92123680658?pwd=d2NtQVV5Zzh5bThES2w2NWFVdkhBZz09 \nMeeting ID: 921 2368 0658 \nPasscode: GradMoney \nSponsored by: Health Promotion\, Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center\, and the Graduate School

SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series presents Tabitha Brown
DESCRIPTION:Tabitha Brown\n\n\nActress & Vegan Foodie / @iamtabithabrown \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Virtual Seating Information\n\n\n\n\nWed.\, Apr. 14\, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.\nVirtual via Zoom \n\n\n\n\n\nMore About Tabitha Brown\n\n\nTabitha Brown literally and metaphorically satisfies the hunger of millions with her unique approach to vegan food and her wholesome\, comedic personality.  Whether it be a new recipe\, acquiring some imparted wisdom\, enjoying a laugh\, or melting away to a soulful\, soothing voice\, Tabitha Brown is home base.  The North Carolina-born actress\, vegan lifestyle personality\, mother and wife\, has amassed over 3 million followers across platforms\, 2 million of which were acquired in 40 days on TikTok\, earning her the coined title of “America’s mom.” \nBrown’s unique journey to veganism highlights the intersection of personal discovery\, food and health.  With a passion for acting\, Brown traveled around the States to pursue her career.  She landed notable theatrical features including “All Between Us\,” alongside Tiffany Haddish; NBC’s hit comedy “Will & Grace”; and the ABC drama “Switched at Birth.” \nIn 2016\, Brown found herself falling ill with chronic neck and head pain for nineteen months.  During this time\, her daughter encouraged her to watch the Netflix documentary “What the Health.” The documentary inspired Brown to start a 30 day vegan challenge; 10 days in\, her pain dissipated.  She began sharing vegan recipes\, her story and philosophical wisdom online\, acting as no one but her true\, authentic self.  Through this process\, she began to feel a glowing sense of true contentment\, satisfaction and health.  However\, it was not solely the veganism that led to this new found happiness\, but also her ability to be in her own skin\, honest with herself\, and doing something she truly loves. \nAlthough her innovative recipes encourage others to make delicious meals\, audiences finish her videos with a new recipe for the soul\, too.  Since\, Brown has led a vegan lifestyle\, promoting the importance of physical\, mental and emotional health to achieve fulfillment. \nLed by her passion for people to feel seen\, heard and loved\, Brown’s communication and relationship with audiences can be largely attributed to her background in acting. Perhaps most notable about Brown is her ability to draw viewers in and feel welcome in her world – even if it is through a screen.  Her delicious\, creative\, yet simple recipes\, sautéed with compassionate messages\, and sprinkled with a pinch of humor\, attract a large following that finds comfort in the ‘auntie they never had.’  Though the term “vegan” often polarizes audiences\, Brown reinvents the idea of veganism\, demonstrating that it can be accessible\, inclusive and accommodating for anyone. \nBrown has developed a role for herself\, with her own script\, direction and audience.  An unconventional way to rise to stardom\, Brown paved a path to achieve her dream of being in front of a camera without sacrificing – and\, in fact embracing – who she is and the unique\, wholesome qualities that make her Tabitha Brown.

Tickets will be available for pickup at the UB Ticket Office (221 Student Union) on February 12th.  As of February 24th any tickets still available will be given away to any UB GSA student (regardless if they have reserved it online) at the UB Ticket Office until 3pm.  After that\, any remaining tickets will be available at the door. \n*PLEASE MAKE SURE TO PICK UP YOUR PHYSICAL TICKET(S) FROM THE UB TICKET OFFICE IN 221 STUDENT UNION.  THE EMAILED TICKET IS ONLY A VOUCHER AND WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR ADMISSION BY THE VENDOR. \n  \n\n\nUB’s 44th Annual Martin Luther King\, Jr. Commemoration Keynote Speaker\n\n\n\nMore About Yusef Salaam\n\n\nOn April 19\, 1989\, a young woman was brutally raped and left for dead in New York City’s Central Park. Five boys—four black and one Latino—were tried and convicted of the crime in a frenzied case that rocked the city. They became known collectively as the Central Park Five. \nTheir convictions were vacated in 2002 after spending between seven and thirteen years of their lives behind bars. The unidentified DNA in the Central Park jogger case\, unlinked to any of the five\, had finally met its owner\, a convicted murderer and serial rapist who confessed. The convictions of the boys\, now men\, were overturned and they were exonerated. One of those boys\, Yusef Salaam\, was just 15 years old when his life was upended and changed forever. \nSince his release\, Salaam has committed himself to advocating and educating people on the issues of false confessions\, police brutality and misconduct\, press ethics and bias\, race and law\, and the disparities in America’s criminal justice system. In 2013\, Ken and Sarah Burns and David McMahon released the documentary “The Central Park Five\,” which told of this travesty from the perspective of Salaam and his cohorts. \nIn 2014\, the Central Park Five received a multi-million dollar settlement from the city of New York for its grievous injustice against them. Salaam was awarded an honorary doctorate that same year and received the President’s Life Time Achievement Award in 2016 from President Barack Obama. \nIn 2018\, he was appointed to the board of the Innocence Project. In May 2019\, Netflix released the limited series titled “When They See Us” based on the true story of Salaam and the other members of the Central Park Five. The series was created and directed by Ava DuVernay; executive producers included Oprah Winfrey and Robert De Niro.
