SUMMARY:Gender Institute presents Amber Jamilla Musser
DESCRIPTION:The UB Gender Institute and the HI Queer Studies Research Workshop are pleased to announce Amber Jamilla Musser \n“Working Around the Incommensurate: Brown Jouissance and Kara Walker’s A Subtlety” \nThursday April 19.\n3:30pm\n120 Clemens Hall\, UB North campus \nhttp://www.buffalo.edu/genderin/news-and-events/upcoming_events/featured-events.html \nAbout Amber Jamilla Musser: \nAmber Jamilla Musser is an Associate Professor or Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research is at the intersection of race\, gender\, and sexuality studies. Her monograph\, Sensational Flesh: Race\, Power\, and Masochism (NYU Press\, 2014) uses masochism as a lens to theorize different felt relationships to power. The book beings together debates on masochism within feminism\, discussions of masochism from psychoanalysis and critiques of colonialism\, literary presentations of masochism\, and performance and visual art that draws on masochism’s repertoire in order to make an argument about the relationship between sensation and knowledge production and the racialization of our current episteme of sexuality. Her current research project\, “Brown Jouissance: Feminine Imaginings” uses women of color’s aesthetic labors to re-imagine epistemologies of sexuality so that they center brown femininity. \nDr. Musser has also published widely on race and critical theory\, queer femininities and race\, race and sexuality\, and queer of color critique. She has an MSt in Women’s Studies from Oxford University and received her PhD in History of Science from Harvard University. She has previously taught gender studies at New York University and Brown University. At Washington University she teaches “Sexuality and the State\,” “Advanced Queer Theory: Intimacies of Precarity\,” “The Politics of Pleasure\,” “Queer of Color Critique: Sense and Sexuality\,” and “Feminist Theory.”

SUMMARY:Distinguished Speaker Series ~ James Balog
DESCRIPTION:James Balog | Apr. 12\, 2018\n\n\nGlobal Expert on Climate Change and Founder of the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) \n\n\n\nMore About James Balog\n\n\nFor decades\, photographer James Balog has broken new conceptual and artistic ground on one of the most important issues of our era: human modification of our planet’s natural systems. An avid mountaineer with a graduate degree in geography and geomorphology\, Balog is equally at home on a Himalayan peak or a whitewater river\, the African savannah or polar icecaps. Balog has become a global spokesman on the subject of climate change and human impact on the environment. In 2007\, he founded the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS)\, the most wide-ranging\, ground-based\, photographic study of glaciers ever conducted; it integrates art and science giving a “visual voice” to the planet’s changing ecosystems. As a consequence of this historic work\, in 2009\, he served as a U.S./NASA representative at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 15) in Copenhagen. In 2015\, at COP 21 in Paris\, he made numerous presentations on behalf of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)\, The United Nations Foundation and Solutions COP 21 at the Grand Palais. \nBalog and the EIS team were featured in the 2012 internationally acclaimed\, award–winning documentary “Chasing Ice” and in the 2009 PBS “NOVA” special “Extreme Ice.” “Chasing Ice” won an Emmy Award in 2014 and was short-listed for an Oscar. It has been screened at the White House\, in the U.S. Congress\, in the U.K. House of Commons and at the United Nations. It has been the subject of features on “NBC Nightly News\,” “ABC Nightline\,” “The Late Show with David Letterman\,” PBS’s “Moyers & Company\,” and “Real Time with Bill Maher.” National Geographic showcased the Extreme Ice Survey in 2007\, 2010 and 2013. \nBalog has given multimedia presentations about the project at TED and at dozens of major institutions including the White House\, the U.S. Congress\, NASA\, the Environmental Protection Agency\, Apple\, Swarovski\, the 2010 Winter Olympics\, North Face\, Qualcomm\, the Bloomberg New Energy Financial Summit\, Cornell University and Duke University. Balog was a keynote speaker at an environmental philosophy conference in Istanbul sponsored by the Ecumenical Patriarch of the 300 million-member Orthodox Church. \nBalog has been honored with many awards. In recent years these include the Royal Photographic Society Hood Medal\, the Heinz Award\, the Duke University LEAF Award\, the Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Walters Prize for Global Environmental Activism at Dickinson College\, an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the University of Alberta\, the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) League Award and the American Geophysical Union Presidential Citation for Science and Society. \nThe most recent of Balog’s eight books is “ICE: Portraits of Vanishing Glaciers\,” published by Rizzoli in 2012. Among his other titles are “Tree: A New Vision of the American Forest” (2004) and “Survivors: A New Vision of Endangered Wildlife” (1990)\, hailed as a major conceptual breakthrough in environmental photography. His work is in dozens of public and private art collections\, including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, the Corcoran Gallery\, the Peabody Essex Museum\, the Denver Art Museum\, and the Gilman Paper Company. \n\n\n\n\nFor source or more information\, please visit:\n\n\n\n\n\n http://jamesbalog.com/about-james/ \n\n\n http://earthvisioninstitute.org/ \n\n\n http://extremeicesurvey.org/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLecture Sponsor(s)\n\n\n\n\n\n UB College of Arts & Sciences

SUMMARY:Nationwide Grad Tax Walkout
DESCRIPTION:Dear fellow Graduate students and everyone passionate about education: \nWe are distressed about the impact the proposed tax bill will have on all graduate students throughout the country. Specifically\, graduate students given tuition tax waivers. \nIf you do not know\, the House of Representatives approved a tax bill that eliminates the tax waiver on tuition waivers and it eliminates student loan interest tax deductions. As an example for here at UB\, our stipend is approximately $24\,000 a year and we are taxed at that income bracket. Under the new bill our adjusted gross income would now include tuition waivers as a form of “income.” This pushes our tax expense upwards of 400% of what we paid this year. Grad School tuition at UB is approximately $21\,000 for full time graduate students taking a full course-load. This cost is 1.5x more for international students\, who make up the majority of the grad student body especially in the school of engineering. This would mean our taxable income would be between $45\,000 and $55\,000. In other schools it is much worse (taxable incomes over $80\,000!). This moves us into unsustainable tax brackets\, at $24\,000 a year our tax burden is approximately $1500. Under the new bill and a taxable income of $45k our tax burden jumps to $5k. This would dramatically affect grad student’s ability to afford basic living expenses. \nUB mainly issues tuition waivers for Grad students- meaning they are paid for by either the department or the advisor through grants. \nShould this tax bill become law (which is very likely)\, I urge you as chairs and the dean to take immediate action in changing the waiver to a scholarship. At the moment this is the only workaround and sends a powerful message to Washington. \nScience and Scientists have long been a-political in the past. Unfortunately this has changed with the current administration. This bill is just one of countless examples of the disregard for our nation’s higher education in particular STEM education. \nGraduate students teach your undergraduate classes\, we grade your papers\, we conduct the lab work to obtain data for grants\, we keep the education-loop going. \nWe are the future of research\, innovation and technology. We are also vital for the structure and function of higher education in the United States. Without us\, universities wouldn’t have enough instructors or teaching assistants for their college courses. Join us in this national walkout to show just how important graduate students are to science\, higher education\, public policy\, and healthcare. \nThere is a nationwide walkout (#gradtaxwalkout) on Wednesday November 29th at 1:00pm EST to show how vital graduate students are to higher education. As a UB grad student as well as the community science education director of Science Demands Action\, Inc (previously Buffalo March for Science) I will be helping to organize this event for UB. \nIt is an hour long only\, as we do not want to punish our universities and labs\, as they are not responsible for this terrible bill. Help send a message by joining your graduate students! \nLocations \nNorth Campus- Founder’s Plaza\nSouth Campus- Between Foster and Crosby \nPlease contact me or Alexandria Trujilio (atrujill@buffalo.edu)  for more information and to let us know you support your grad students! It would be much appreciated if this email could be forwarded to all grad students\, deans\, chairs\, and professors- as this bill will affect us all. \nHelp us get the word out with the #gradtaxwalkout\, and join us by walking to either Founder’s Plaza on North Campus or Between Foster and Crosby Halls on South Campus on Wednesday November 29th at 1:00pm EST. Fight on! \nLink to National Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/300955367071512/ \nLink for UB’s Walkout Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/185775955306704/ \nSincerely\, \nRandall J. With a deft eye on modern culture\, she brilliantly critiques its ebb and flow with both wit and ferocity. \nWords like “courage\,” “humor\,” and “smart” are frequently deployed when describing Gay. Her collection of essays\, “Bad Feminist\,” was a New York Times best-seller and is universally considered the quintessential exploration of modern feminism. NPR named it one of the best books of the year and Salon declared the book “trailblazing.” Her powerful debut novel\, “An Untamed State\,” was long listed for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize. She has two upcoming releases–“Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body” is a painstaking examination of body image\, and “Difficult Women” is a collection of stories. \nGay is a contributing op-ed writer for The New York Times. She was a founding editor of PANK and non-fiction editor at The Rumpus. Her writing has also appeared in McSweeney’s\, The Nation and many other publications. \nGay is an associate professor of English at Purdue University. \n\n\nFor source or more information\, please visit:\n\n\n\n\n Agency Listing \n\n\n Personal Website \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLecture Sponsor(s)\n\n\n\n\n Graduate Student Association
