SUMMARY:Pharmaceutical Sciences GSA ~ 13th Annual Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The “13th Annual Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Symposium” is an all-day event in which graduate students have the opportunity to meet with a prominent alumna/alumnus from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.  This year we are pleased to announce Dr. Holly Kimko as the distinguished alumna.  Dr. Kimko is a Scientific Director and Janssen Fellow at Janssen Research and Development of Johnson & Johnson from the Global Clinical Pharmacology Department.  During this all-day event\, graduate students will be invited to engage in a career development lunch with the keynote speaker\, as well as have the opportunity to meet Dr. Kimko one-on-one to discuss research\, network\, and learn about opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry.  The day-long event will conclude with a keynote speech from Dr. Kimko entitled “How Does Modeling & Simulation Support Totality of Evidence for Regulatory Decisions?’  The keynote speech will be of interest to a variety of disciplines including\, but not limited to Biological Sciences\, Pharmacy\, RPCI\, Pharmacology & Toxicology\, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.  We firmly believe that providing graduate students with the opportunity to meet a distinguished alumna will enhance their graduate student experience and inspire them to strive for similar success.  A detailed description of the event will be advertised appropriately such that any interested person at the university might benefit from the event.  The GSA will be visibly acknowledged as a cosponsor of the event.

SUMMARY:CSEP GSA ~ Motivational Interviewing Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The seminar will be open to all interested graduate students and community members\, and will focus on training in the techniques and principles of motivational interviewing.  Motivational interviewing is a counseling approach that focuses on facilitating and engaging intrinsic motivation within the client in order to change behavior.  It has been very successful in helping individuals overcome addiction problems\, and can be used across many different domains\, including private practice\, school\, and hospitals settings.  Although graduate students often hear about motivational interviewing in class\, we are not given any specific training in this technique.  This seminar would engage students across multiple disciplines to learn about and practice using this extremely beneficial\, evidence based approach.

SUMMARY:Social Work GSA ~ Restorative Justice Day
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will be open to all interested graduate students and community members\, and will focus on training in the techniques and principles of restorative justice.  Restorative Justice Practices help to build healthy communities\, increase social capital\, reduce the impact of crime\, decrease antisocial behavior\, repair harm\, and restore relationships.  Restorative justice serves as an alternative to retributive systems\, with a focus on engaging all stakeholders to repair harm through accountability\, safety\, and competency.  Restorative Justice Practices in schools and in the juvenile justice system have been known to produce a higher success rate in the areas of victim and offender satisfaction\, restitution compliance\, and reduced recidivism compared to our typical system of retributive justice.  As a result\, Restorative Practices are increasingly being used throughout the country.  This seminar would engage students across multiple disciplines to learn about and practice using this extremely beneficial\, evidence based approach.

SUMMARY:RLL Symposium ~ Intersections: Collage of Urban Networks
DESCRIPTION:The City provides with a unique opportunity to create and be created in many different ways.  Identities and cultures become an indentifying marker against a backdrop of individuality.  Against the backdrop of skyscrapers\, new opportunities are born.  In these intersections paintings\, literature\, architecture\, and performance\, amongst many other mediums we find a complex\, multi-faceted and often fragmented collage of cultures forming a snapshot of human existence.  Intersections serve as a reminder of where humanity becomes a cosmopolitan endeavor.  At our conference we will discuss these connections.

SUMMARY:Nonviolence Training ~ Social Work GSA
DESCRIPTION:The School of Social Work GSA is a cosponsor to this day-long training in the theory and practice of nonviolence on Saturday\, March 11th from 9am-4pm in the Student Union (room 145). It is a unique opportunity for students\, staff\, and faculty to engage together and develop useful tools to address various issues on campus as a community. \nThe training which will be led by two certified nonviolence trainers from a non-profit organization called Something New. Something New was originally based in Selma\, Alabama\, and has been engaging in community building and social justice work for over ten years. We are so excited to be able to bring these trainers to UB\, and would love to extend the invitation to as many students and faculty as possible. \n“WHAT WE ARE UP AGAINST – Prejudice\, Bias\, Oppression\, Hate\, Fear\, Instability & Violence is all around us and we must come together to “Build Community” \nNew Way’s goal is simple: We train people how to effectively and peacefully handle internal and external conflict. Building on the principles of Gandhi\, Mandela\, and Dr. King\, the nonviolence method to conflict reconciliation can be powerfully applied to any setting\, any issue\, or any relationship. It has proven successful in all kinds of settings from national power struggles\, to prisons\, to corporations and to college campuses. Whether the end is disciplined practice of the principles of nonviolence in a hostile setting\, the ability to facilitate dialogue among people with different values and priorities\, or some other expression of peacemaking\, this training provides an important first step. You’ll engage in personal reflection\, become closer with team members\, and walk away more self-aware. \n“If one does not practice nonviolence in one’s personal relations with others and hopes to use it in bigger affairs\, one is vastly mistaken.” – Gandhi” \nPlease distribute the attached flyer to your students/networks. RSVP for the training event to medepetr@buffalo.edu or delaneyd@buffalo.edu by March 4th.
