SUMMARY:Chemistry Graduate Student Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 37th Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) is an event that is organized entirely by graduate students from the Department of Chemistry. The GSS annually hosts ~150 graduate students from over a dozen institutions across the northeastern United States and southern Ontario. We have students participating from other departments as well. In the past we have had presenters from physics\, chemical engineering\, environmental engineering\, and biomedical sciences. This is an invaluable event for many graduate students who can participate by presenting a poster at the poster session and/or give a 15-20 minute talk about their research in a semi-formal setting. There is no registration fee\, and meals are provided for all three days of the symposium. Each day will feature a different keynote speaking\, including: Dr. George L. Grobe III VP of Research and Development for Vision Care at Bausch and Lomb (UB alumni)\, Prof. Andy Borovik from The University of California\, Irvine\, and Prof. Julia Laskin from Purdue University.

SUMMARY:Future of Medicine Networking Event
DESCRIPTION:“You do not need to leave Buffalo to be an innovator. It all starts here.” \n\nNelson Hopkins\, MD\, SUNY Distinguished Professor of neurosurgery and founder and chief scientific officer of the Jacobs Institute\n\n  \nThe rapid acceleration of technology is shaking up fields and industries along the way. This includes medicine. Between blockchain technologies\, artificial intelligence\, augmented reality\, advancements in genetic understanding and modification\, the way we practice in our fields may be shifting dramatically. Unless we begin talking about it\, we may be unprepared during adoption – so join us for a conversation. \nThe Graduate Nursing Organization aims to host an interdisciplinary networking event\, projected to take place on the 10th of May\, facilitating conversations around the ethics and possibilities of clinical work in our future\, as modified by emerging technologies. \nIn conjunction with innovators in the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus\, the event will be kicked off with a panel discussion of innovators right here in Buffalo\, who are leading the charge in various fields within medicine. \nFood and drinks will be provided \nAs medicine advances\, the one factor that will remain the same is a need for inter-professional collaboration. We want you to be a part of this with us. Please connect if you are interested in continuing the conversation.

SUMMARY:Pohela Boishak Bengali New Year
DESCRIPTION:Pohela Boishak – Bengali New Years- The Bengali New Year is based on a solar calendar introduced over 400 years ago by the Mogul Emperor Akbar. This year’s celebration\, according to the Bengali calendar\, ushers in the year 1426\, and is celebrated on April 14th. Traditionally\, the day is marked with singing\, processions\, and fairs. Corresponding to the harvest and the beginning of the financial year for businesses\, it is a time of happiness and joy\, and an occasion for festivals and feasting. Pohela Baishakh is one of the biggest and most significant Bengali festivals\, it is celebrated with much fervor and enthusiasm by Bengalis all over the nation. Women and men wear traditional attires in the color of red and white. \nWe will be showcasing the historically rich\, colorful culture of Bangladesh and recreates the atmosphere of optimism and joy that characterizes this occasion back home. Traditional Bangladeshi ethnic foods\, ethnic dresses\, indigenous arts and crafts\, and open air performances of Bengali music and dance\, and cultural program will be featured at this festival. \nThis event has never been celebrated on UB campus before. We are planning on celebrating this event on a grand scale with an estimated audience of 100 people. The event will not only enrich the ones attending but also the UB community as knowledge about Bangladeshi culture and tradition will be acknowledged.  We plan to hold the event in mid-April or late April 2019. \nWe are planning on holding this event at Westin hotel\, in downtown and cater traditional Bangladeshi food from Bangladeshi Restaurant. We will have tons of performances by UB students as well as games and henna artists. We will also have traditional face painting booths\, flower booths\, and a photo booth! \nWe have many international Bangladeshi students\, both undergrad and grad\, who misses this event back home tremendously. We also have A LOT of non-Bengali students on campus who enjoys the traditions and culture of Bangladeshi immensely. We had our Briyani Night event recently\, which was held at Flint Community Center\, almost 120 people came and many of the attendees were non-Bengali and they were all very interested in Pohela Boishak event\, when we mentioned it to them. I think this event will be a great way to connect students of all races\, not just Bangladeshis\, and enrich the UB community. \nTickets are on sale now at the SBI Ticket Offices in 221 Student Union and 135 Diefendorf Hall for $3 each.

SUMMARY:History GSA ~ Milton Plesur Conference
DESCRIPTION:This year will be the 28th year that the Graduate History Association (GHA) has held the annual Milton Plesur Graduate History Conference as an opportunity for M.A. and Ph.D. students from across the United States and around the world to present original research from a variety of fields.  This year’s conference is entitled “(Im)Material Culture: Identity and Agency in Commonplace Objects” and continues our department’s work towards re-orienting the historical gaze away from traditional (masculine\, political) histories toward a more inclusive and diverse social narrative.  The goal of this year’s conference was to gather interdisciplinary work that transcends geographic and temporal boundaries\, but that fits within our theme of the study of material culture.  Our Call for Papers was sent to over 80 colleges and universities in the United States and was posted on H-Net for reference by graduate level historians around the world.  We have received submissions from five U.S. states\, Canada\, Nigeria\, the United Kingdom and South Korea\, as well as from University at Buffalo students in the History\, Transnational Studies\, and Architecture departments.  This year we are pleased to welcome Dr. Katherine Ott\, Curator of the Division of Medicine and Science at the National Museum of American History to open the conference with a keynote address on Friday.  Following the address\, participants are invited to dinner.  Saturday will begin with a continental breakfast followed by two panels in the morning\, a break for lunch\, four panels in the afternoon\, followed by a closing reception.

SUMMARY:Chemistry's Graduate Student Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 36th Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) is an event that is organized entirely by graduate students from the Department of Chemistry.  The GSS annually hosts ~150 graduate students from over a dozen institutions across the northeastern United States and southern Ontario.  We have students participating from other departments as well.  In the past we have had presenters from physics\, chemical engineering\, environmental engineering\, and biomedical sciences.  This is an invaluable event for many graduate students who can participate by presenting a poster at the poster session and/or give a 15-20 minute talk about their research in semi-formal setting.  There is no registration fee\, and meals are provided for all three days of the symposium.  Each day will feature a different keynote speaking\, including: Prof. Malika Jeffries-EL from Boston University\, Prof. Andy Borovik from the University of California\, Irvine\, and Prof. Heather Desaire from the University of Kansas.

SUMMARY:Restorative Justice Day
DESCRIPTION:Restorative Justice Day is an annual event co-sponsored by the School of Social Work\, the Graduate School of Education\, and several community organizations.  The day focuses on restorative practices\, which are a set of approaches to education and the criminal justice system.  The restorative approach emphasizes restoring the relationships that are broken when harm has occurred\, as opposed to simply punishing the offender.  RJ Day brings together both local and national voices in the restorative movement\, and gives students\, faculty\, and community members a chance to discuss issues such as the role of police\, issues of youth\, building stronger\, more diverse communities\, and zero-tolerance policies in schools.
