SUMMARY:Buffalo-Niagara Pharmaceutical Sciences Networking Event
DESCRIPTION:Buffalo-Niagara Local Pharmaceutical Sciences Event is an evening event in which the graduate students have the opportunity to meet with local pharmaceutical scientists from local academic and research institutions such as UB and Roswell Park Cancer Institute\, various contract research organizations (Simulations Plus\, ICPD and ePD) and prominent pharmacometrician in the field\, Dr. David D’Argenio and Dr. Murali Ramanathan. Dr. David D’Argenio is Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern and the inaugural holder of the Chonette Chair of Biomedical Technology. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University at Buffalo\, SUNY. Dr. D’Argenio’s research program focuses on to develop\, evaluate\, apply\, and disseminate methods of QSP and pharmacometrics to advance model-based discovery\, development\, and precision use of medicines\, leading to more effective treatments for life threatening diseases. The methods for QSP that his group has developed and applied are aimed at quantifying the mechanisms of action of different therapeutic modalities including small molecule and proteins drugs\, cell and gene therapies\, and protein degraders. Dr. Ramanathan is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University at Buffalo\, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is involved in clinical and translational research program in multiple sclerosis (MS) therapeutics. His group has extensive experience in pharmaceutical applications of “big data” and modeling analyses using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques of large high-dimensional data sets containing environmental factors\, genetic and immunological biomarkers\, quantitative neuroimaging metrics and clinical measures in MS. The event will open with keynote speech that is open to the university from Dr. D’Argenio\, and Dr. Ramanathan will be of interest to a variety of disciplines\, including\, but not limited to\, Biological Sciences\, Pharmacy\, Pharmacology/Toxicology\, Chemistry\, and Chemical Engineering. The graduate students will be invited to engage in a career development reception with as well as have the opportunity to meet the speakers and local scientists one-on-one to discuss research\, network\, and learn about opportunities within the pharmaceutical industry and academia. We firmly believe that providing graduate students with the opportunity to meet distinguished and leading scientists will enhance their graduate student experience and inspire them to strive for similar success. A detailed description of the event will be advertised appropriately\, such that any interested person at the university might benefit from the event. UB-GSA will be visibly acknowledged as a cosponsor of the event.

SUMMARY:Behavior and Brain Sciences Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Behavior and Brain Sciences Symposium aims to showcase the far-reaching influence of cross-disciplinary work in psychology. Exploring the intersectionality of cognitive\, behavioral neuroscience\, social\, and clinical psychology can inspire novel and impactful research. By encouraging interactions between diverse perspectives and methodologies\, we aim to highlight the potential for innovative approaches to psychological questions. The symposium will include selected faculty and graduate student talks\, as well as poster presentations on research being conducted at the University at Buffalo. This event will give students a local opportunity to gain presentation experience and to learn more about research across the brain\, behavioral\, cognitive\, and social sciences.

SUMMARY:Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Symposium is an annual tradition within the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences held as an all-day event in which graduate students have the opportunity to meet with a prominent alumna/alumnus from the Pharmaceutical Sciences department. This year\, we have invited Dr. Doahn (Donny) Tran as our distinguished alumnus. Dr. Tran currently serves as Deputy Director of the Division of Cardiometabolic and Endocrine Pharmacology at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)\, and he has previousy held several other leadership positions within the FDA during his time there including Deputy Director for the Division of Bone\, Reproductive and Urologic Products and the Division of Dermatology and Dental Products. Dr. Tran has several decades of experience to share amongst current pharmaceutical sciences graduate students\, and we are excited to hear of his fruitful career following his graduate education at UB. During the symposium\, graduate students will have the opportunity to engage in a career development lunch session with Dr. Tran and fellow student leaders within the department. Further\, students will be able to reserve a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Tran to further discuss his research and career\, expand their career network\, and learn about opportunities available to pharmaceutical science graduates within the pharmaceutical regulatory area. The day-long event will conclude with a keynote speech from Dr. Tran delivered to the university. This speech will be of great interest not only to those wihtin the pharmaceutical sciences\, but also across several disciplines including Biological Sciences\, Pharmacy\, Pharmacology and Toxicology\, Chemistry\, Public Health\, and Chemical Engineering\, among others. We firmly believe that providing graduate students with the opportunity to meet with distinguished UB alumni will enhance their graduate student experience and inspire them to strive for similar success.
