SUMMARY:Restorative Justice Day
DESCRIPTION:Restorative Justice Day is an educational forum providing insight into how communities\, victims\, and offenders can come together to repair harm that may have occurred. In stark contrast to retributive systems at hand\, Restorative Justice provides a voice and platform for those that have inflicted or have been impacted by harm to come together to create just solutions. \nResults from Restorative Justice practices have led to decreased recidivism rates and community members and victims feeling safer and more connected to their communities. \nCome hear guest speakers\, learn facilitation strategies\, and see how Restorative Justice is being utilized at our university and throughout Buffalo. As university students\, we are uniquely positioned to be the next implementers of Restorative Justice practices in creating a more just\, connected\, and safer Buffalo for all. Come be a part of this growing movement and learn how you can be involved at our university and throughout the Buffalo community! \nhttps://buffalo.collegiatelink.net/organization/socialworkgsa/calendar/details/812189 \n4/29/2016 146 & 148 Diefendorf Hall 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM\n9-00-10:00 Introduction/Benefits of RJ\, ECRJC/Community Efforts\, Short Film\n10:00-11:00 Speakers (TBD)\n11:00-12:30 Intro to Circles\, Practice/Facilitation\, Debrief\n12:30-1:00 Lunch\, Tabling/Sign-Ups\, Networking\n1:00-2:00 Intro to Victim Offender Conferencing\, Video\n2:00-3:00 Speakers (TBD)\n3:00-4:30 Intro to Conferencing\, Practice/Facilitation\, Debrief\n4:30-5:00 Tabling/Sign-Ups\, Networking

SUMMARY:Socializing Data: Mapping Culture and Governing Cities in the Era of Big Social Media
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nNew sources of geographically referenced “big data” have become central to the perception and governance of cities.  Of particular interest are crowd-sourced contributions from social media that provide key raw material for automatically-coded representations of places (e.g.\, a map based search for amenities on a mobile phone).  This talk reviews the power-laden ways in which social media-derived data represent the cultures of cities as well as the potential/problems in using these data for urban research and decision-making.  The recent style of “smart cities” urban governance\, leverages big data – collected from mobile phones\, social media feeds\, sensors embedded in the built environment\, etc – to rationalize the management of urban areas. This talk documents the historical longevity associated with the central ideas within smart city governance – particular the idea that enough data/information/knowledge can solve society problems. It then critiques the idealized approach to urban governance found both in marketing materials and some criticisms. In contrast to these overly simplistic approaches\, this talk demonstrates how social media data and derived metrics might offer useful insight and policy direction\, while recognizing that the decisions of what is important and possible to record is simultaneously producing the cities that we aim to measure.
