SUMMARY:End-of-Semester Celebration and Graduate Student Social
DESCRIPTION:End-of-Semester Celebration and Graduate Student Social \nThe Electrical Engineering Graduate Student Association (EE GSA) will host its annual End-of-Semester Celebration on May 8\, 2026\, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Inchin’s Bamboo Garden. This event is organized as a fun and welcoming gathering for graduate students to relax\, unwind\, and celebrate the completion of the semester after exams\, project deadlines\, research milestones\, and other academic pressures. \nThis event has traditionally been an EE department gathering\, but this year we are intentionally expanding it to welcome a broader graduate student audience across departments. By opening the event to all graduate students\, we hope to create a larger community-building opportunity that encourages social connection\, interdisciplinary interaction\, and a stronger sense of belonging on campus. The event will provide a casual and inclusive environment where students can meet peers outside their own programs\, strengthen friendships\, and enjoy a positive end-of-semester experience together. \nThe program will include food\, beverages\, and a relaxed social atmosphere designed to help students de-stress and recharge before the summer period. Because graduate students often face intense workloads and limited opportunities for informal social engagement\, this event serves as an important chance to support student well-being\, community engagement\, and cross-departmental networking. Its broad appeal comes from offering a shared opportunity for celebration\, connection\, and stress relief that is relevant to graduate students from many academic disciplines\, not only Electrical Engineering. \nTickets on sale now!  Limited quantity available.  First come\, first served. \nhttps://buffalo.universitytickets.com/w/event.aspx?id=5658

SUMMARY:English GSA Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the contact between English and its others\, many anglophone writers have sought to extend the limits of literary form and defamiliarize entrenched linguistic and expressive practices through translation. Recognizing the fraught relationship between languages and cultures\, translation scholarship is energized by questions of (in)fidelity\, authority\, and form. While these questions are not new\, recent approaches render the effort of translation even more explicit. From Wong May’s 2022 re-formatting of T’ang era poems to Ugly Duckling Presse’s experimental book formats\, new methods for presenting translation challenge an author’s authority\, an audience’s fluency\, and the stability of a text as origin from which translators proceed—all while emphasizing the translator’s visible\, creative role. \nThis symposium will synthesize these recent developments and consider the new generative modes of literary production that are evolving through methodologies such as adaptation\, pseudo-translation\, and multi-media translations. These methods highlight problems of translatability and untranslatability. How do we discuss works that explicitly deviate from their source and foreground translation as a practice? What are we talking about when we say “fidelity” or even “original”? How might we do justice to the fraught sense of authority in a translation? And what would it mean to move out of a familiar terminology of translation toward a broader definition? This symposium proposes to approach these questions by examining current methods while speculating possible future directions for translation. Alongside presentations on recent translation developments\, this symposium will also serve as an opportunity to hear recent translation work from a diverse range of languages\, particularly Asian and Western European languages. \nAll participants must review the GSA’s Safety Acknowledgement and Participant Disclaimer before attending.

SUMMARY:Chemistry Graduate Student Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Since its inception in 1983\, the Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) has been organized entirely by the graduate students within the Department of Chemistry at UB. Since that time\, the GSS has grown into an established and well-known annual symposium hosting 80 to 120 graduate students from the United States and Canada. This event offers graduate students a forum to present their research to an audience of their peers and provides unique networking opportunities. The symposium consists of posters and presentations given by attending graduate students; highlighted by three keynote speakers who are prominent in their respective fields. We are also expanding the event this year to undergraduates in the WNY area in order to give these students another opportunity to see graduate research and present their own new and exciting science to a welcoming audience. This also provides an opportunity for these students to expand their CVs as they move on to higher education.

Each presenter will be able to receive feedback from attendees to help them better their work and keep it moving forward. As part of this professionalization\, there will be two keynote speakers\, one for each day\, where graduate students\, and others present\, can experience dialoguing with noted scholars about their work. Presenters will be chosen on a first-come-first served basis\, until all slots are filled\, so long as what they are looking to present aligns with the intended thematic elements (i.e. Romance Languages\, Literatures\, and discourses related). The goals of these workshops are: engaging in professionalization\, provoke stimulating thoughts\, conversation\, and interdisciplinary engagement. \nAll participants must review the GSA’s Safety Acknowledgement and Participant Disclaimer before attending.

SUMMARY:Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Symposium is an annual tradition within the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences held as an all-day event in which graduate students have the opportunity to meet with a prominent alumna/alumnus from the Pharmaceutical Sciences department. This year\, we have invited Dr. Doahn (Donny) Tran as our distinguished alumnus. Dr. Tran currently serves as Deputy Director of the Division of Cardiometabolic and Endocrine Pharmacology at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)\, and he has previousy held several other leadership positions within the FDA during his time there including Deputy Director for the Division of Bone\, Reproductive and Urologic Products and the Division of Dermatology and Dental Products. Dr. Tran has several decades of experience to share amongst current pharmaceutical sciences graduate students\, and we are excited to hear of his fruitful career following his graduate education at UB. During the symposium\, graduate students will have the opportunity to engage in a career development lunch session with Dr. Tran and fellow student leaders within the department. Further\, students will be able to reserve a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Tran to further discuss his research and career\, expand their career network\, and learn about opportunities available to pharmaceutical science graduates within the pharmaceutical regulatory area. The day-long event will conclude with a keynote speech from Dr. Tran delivered to the university. This speech will be of great interest not only to those wihtin the pharmaceutical sciences\, but also across several disciplines including Biological Sciences\, Pharmacy\, Pharmacology and Toxicology\, Chemistry\, Public Health\, and Chemical Engineering\, among others. We firmly believe that providing graduate students with the opportunity to meet with distinguished UB alumni will enhance their graduate student experience and inspire them to strive for similar success.
