SUMMARY:Storyteller's Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 10th Annual Storyteller’s Conference will take place on 4/11/2014-4/12/2014. This conference is held annually to honor John Mohawk\, renowned Indigenous intellectual and a founding member of the Department of American Studies and Native American Studies at UB\, as well as Barry White\, a driving force within the UB community. The conference is open to graduate students\, faculty\, community members\, independent scholars and artists. The conference begins Friday evening with a social and continues on Saturday with a day full of panels\, a keynote lecture by Kahnawake Mohawk scholar Gerald Taiaiake Alfred\, currently head of the Indigenous Governance program at the University at Victoria\, BC\, and ends with a dinner at Banchetti’s with a presentation from John Mohawk Memorial speaker Agnes Williams (Seneca) of Indigenous Women’s Initiatives here in Buffalo\, NY. This year’s theme\, “Kahwatsire: Empowering New Narratives and Restoring Realities” invites guests and speakers to reflect on the Kanienkehaka (Mohawk) concept of Kahwatsire which evokes the concepts of family\, community\, and community building through collective efforts.
