SUMMARY:Karen Finley ~ Visual Studies Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Monday 10/21 at 6:30pm: Visual Studies Speaker Series Lecture: Trauma and Creativity\nThe Gender Institute\, the Graduate Student Association\, the Leslie Lohman Museum for Gay and Lesbian Art Queer Art Lecture Series\, and the Department of Visual Studies Speaker Series present Karen Finley\, Artist in Residency. \nKaren Finley is an artist\, performer and author.  Born in Chicago\, she received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She works in a variety of mediums such as installation\, video\, performance\, public art\, visual art\, music and literature.  She has performed and exhibited internationally. Finley was the named plaintiff in Finley vs. The NEA that was argued in the Supreme Court in 1998 about the application of decency in government funding.  Finley is active in freedom of expression concerns\, visual culture\, and art education and lectures\, and gives workshops widely. The author of 8 books including her latest work of creative nonfiction; Reality Shows published by Feminist Press 2011. Most recently she had a performance and installation of her interactive work Sext Me if You Can at the New Museum\, New York City\, May 2013\, where museum patrons commission Finley with a sext taken in a private booth in the museum\, which she then transforms into art. She is the recipient of many awards and grants including a Guggenheim Fellowship. She is an arts professor in the department of Art and Public Policy at New York University. \nFlier
