{"id":990,"date":"2021-10-13T02:29:27","date_gmt":"2021-10-13T02:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/glaciermodelinglab\/?p=990"},"modified":"2021-10-13T02:54:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-13T02:54:43","slug":"autumn-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/glaciermodelinglab\/2021\/10\/13\/autumn-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"Autumn hike!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-background-color has-text-color\"><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">It was a beautiful and unseasonably warm Sunday, so we joined together for a lovely walk in the woods.  <\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/explore\/trail\/us\/new-york\/southcreek-trail-18-mile-creek\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-background-color\">Eighteen Mile Creek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> is a short hike (not 18 miles!!) along a canyon rim within a half hour&#8217;s drive of the UB campus.  We all enjoyed the time outdoors and the break from Sunday homework.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><span class=\"has-inline-color has-background-color\">From left to right: Naureen, Kristin, Jess, Courtney, Leah, Hannah, Jorge, Eric, and Donglai.<\/span><\/em> <span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> Leah and Donglai are touching <strong>shale concretions<\/strong>, which were all over in the creek and on the canyon walls.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">We also noticed New Zealand mud snails in the creek &#8212; tiny (~5 mm) invasive snails that anchored themselves to the stream bed in fast-flowing areas.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The geology in the canyon walls is Wanakah Shale, which was deposited in the middle Devonian (~385 million years ago).  It is full of fossils &#8212; trilobites, crinoid stems, and brachiopods &#8212; but we did not go looking for these.  A local fossil hunting site, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/penndixie.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-background-color\">Penn Dixie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">, is the place to go for that!  <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was a beautiful and unseasonably warm Sunday, so we joined together for a lovely walk in the woods.
