Figure by PhD student Courtney Shafer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over multiple field seasons, we are deploying various geophysical instruments to observe the water inside and under Helheim Glacier from its surface. To either side of the crevasse are our GPS stations (black squares) and the solar panels that power them during the daylight months (also black squares).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We observe the time-evolution of crevasse width using the GPS units.  This measurement is directly comparable to the output of the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/jzmejia\/crevasse_propagation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crevasse propagation model <\/a>we developed.&nbsp; The crevasse model, in turn, sits within a broader system of models that follows the water form the surface, downward through the snow,  laterally through the firn aquifer, through the crevasse and, finally, to the subglacial water system that leads to the ocean.  The GPS data will be used to validate the first three stages of this hydrologic system model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background-color has-secondary-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">UB personnel:<\/span><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/glaciermodelinglab\/group-members\/kristin-poinar-research-biography\/\">Kristin Poinar<\/a> (PI), <a href=\"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/glaciermodelinglab\/group-members\/jessica-mejia-research\/\">Jess Mejia<\/a> (postdoc 2021-2024), and Kniya Duncan (MS\/PhD student).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Our collaborators<\/span><\/strong> are at Georgia Tech (Winnie Chu&#8217;s lab) and Dartmouth (Colin Meyer&#8217;s lab).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The Heising-Simons Foundation<\/span><\/strong> has funded this project as part of a large effort to characterize the recent behavior of Helheim Glacier, from the snow surface to the fjord mouth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><mark style=\"color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><\/mark>I&#8217;m always looking to add motivated students to my research group.
