{"id":96,"date":"2012-10-04T14:43:41","date_gmt":"2012-10-04T14:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cjwalshblog.wordpress.com\/?page_id=96"},"modified":"2012-10-04T14:43:41","modified_gmt":"2012-10-04T14:43:41","slug":"developing-self-awareness","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/executive-professional-mba\/tips-for-developing-emotional-self-awareness\/developing-self-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"Developing Self-Awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is Self-Awareness?<\/strong>\u00a0 It is\u00a0your ability to effectively read how\u00a0you react to cues in the environment.\u00a0\u00a0It is when you are\u00a0aware of how your emotions affect your performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are four levels of Self-Awareness: <\/strong>The first level requires you to be aware of how you feel in specific situations.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve reached the second level when you understand what triggers certain emotions\/reactions in\u00a0the way you feel.\u00a0 The third level is when you realize how your emotions impact you and others.\u00a0 Ultimately, you are looking to have the fourth level of Self-Awareness which is emotional insight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You have\u00a0Self-Awareness if <\/strong>you understand subtle signals that tell you how you are feeling.\u00a0 You are also\u00a0able to articulate those feelings and show them appropriately\u00a0in social settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0You may want to improve your Self-Awareness<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>if<\/strong>\u00a0you are easily irritated,\u00a0get angry and\/or treat people abrasively.\u00a0 You\u00a0 might also look at this competency if you struggle balancing you work life, health and family needs. If you have ever thought, or been told, that you are socially awkward you may also want to improve your Self-Awareness.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/executive-professional-mba\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2012\/10\/selfawareness.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-138\" title=\"selfawareness\" src=\"http:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/executive-professional-mba\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2012\/10\/selfawareness.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a>The most effective way to develop Emotional Self-Awareness is<\/strong> to have a couple of people help you&#8230;.someone in your personal life and someone in your professional life.\u00a0 You can not develop Emotional Self-Awareness on your own because you &#8220;don&#8217;t know what you don&#8217;t know.&#8221;\u00a0 <strong>Choose people you trust that you think are very self-aware<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Show them this\u00a0description.\u00a0 Ask them to give you\u00a0feedback on the past as well as in situations moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Set your calendar to go off 3 or 4 times a day.\u00a0 Your goal is to write down a word or two that describes how you feel.\u00a0 Do this for 2 weeks.\u00a0 Keep a record of your responses.\u00a0 Take a look back at any patterns you notice&#8230; do you start the day in a positive way?\u00a0 Do you get angry in meetings with peers?\u00a0 Bosses?\u00a0 Family?\u00a0 When you&#8217;re tired? If you&#8217;re hungry?<\/p>\n<p>Now ask yourself how you can <strong>diffuse some of these situations before they occur<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you tend to come home each day in a bad mood, do something to &#8220;reset&#8221; your day before walking into the house.\u00a0 Work out? Play your favorite music on the way home (save it specifically for this purpose)?\u00a0 Walk the dog\u00a0before settling in at\u00a0home?<\/p>\n<p>If you notice you are short tempered\u00a0at work, is it when you are in group situations? When your boss asks you direct questions?
