{"id":150,"date":"2017-09-29T19:25:53","date_gmt":"2017-09-29T19:25:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wpdev.acsu.buffalo.edu\/does-research\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2021-01-29T23:22:00","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T23:22:00","slug":"homepage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/does-research\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">Welcome to the Design of Open Engineering Systems (DOES) Lab at the University at Buffalo &#8211; SUNY.&nbsp; In our lab, we are studying the science behind the design of <em>open engineering systems<\/em> or systems that interact with and are influenced by their external environments.&nbsp; As such, the design of such systems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is influenced by a network of decisions made by multiple people from multiple disciplines<\/li>\n<li>is influenced by a wide range of sources of information including designers, users, and sensors<\/li>\n<li>is many times characterized by social-technical considerations including preferences, uncertainty, ambiguity, adaptation, and learning<\/li>\n<li>is characterized by multiple stakeholders and competing measures of value<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In our research, we contribute to and leverage the state-of-the-art in design science, multiobjective optimization, machine learning, and decision theory.<\/p>\n<p>Please feel free to browse through our lab member profiles and their current projects to learn more about our specific research.&nbsp; We also have an extensive list of publications that are available.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\">MAE DEPARTMENT<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The DOES Lab is part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/mae.buffalo.edu\">Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department<\/a> at the University at Buffalo and affiliated with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/SMART\">Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies (SMART) Community of Excellence.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\">LATEST UPDATES<\/h2>\n<p><b>March &#8217;19:<\/b>&nbsp;Phil Odonkor won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/ubnow\/stories\/2019\/03\/chancellors-awards-student-excellence.html\">SUNY Chancellor&#8217;s Award<\/a>!!<br \/>\n<b>March &#8217;19:<\/b>&nbsp;Seyedeh Elaheh and Phil Odonkor placed 1st and 2nd at the 2019 MAE Poster competition!!<br \/>\n<b>December &#8217;18:<\/b>&nbsp;Phil Odonkor gave an insightful talk at TEDx Buffalo. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YYytkXsfMQw\">Watch the video here.<\/a><br \/>\n<b>December &#8217;18:<\/b>&nbsp;Phil Odonkor and Zack Ball had their papers published in the Journal of Mechanical Design.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mechanicaldesign.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org\/article.aspx?articleid=2706402\"><span id=\"scm6MainContent_lblArticleTitle\">Automated Design of Energy Efficient Control Strategies for Building Clusters Using Reinforcement Learning<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mechanicaldesign.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org\/article.aspx?articleid=2712594\">Mass Collaboration Project Recommendation Within Open-Innovation Design Networks<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>September &#8217;18:<\/b>&nbsp;Elaheh has been elected as the President of the <a href=\"http:\/\/gsa.buffalo.edu\/mae\/\">Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering divison of the Graduate Student Association<\/a>.
