GUIDELINES FOR PUBLICATION

Committee Name: Publication/Dissemination/Implementation
Chair: Dr. Zhezhen Jin
Members: Markatou, Kennedy, Talal, Good, Hyzy

Charter: The committee will develop publications, identify target journals, and oversee dissemination activities. The committee will develop a strategic plan for accomplishing the objectives stated before, including publication guidelines development. To achieve this latest goal, the various disciplinary standards, as represented by the scientific disciplines of the proposal’s investigators (Statistics, Computer Science, Medicine, Linguistics), will be considered. The committee also, in collaboration and discussion with the overall PI of the award, will guide authorship attribution and adjudication. In cases of intense disagreement, the final decision on authorship lies with the PI of the award, Dr. Markatou.

Procedures: People who plan to publish or disseminate research results from the project are required to submit a proposal to the committee. Please download the relevant form located on the project’s website. At a minimum, the proposal should include the scientific question to be investigated, the potential authorship, the division of work amongst the co-authors, and individuals’ agreement of the potential work to be included.  The publication proposal should also indicate the timeline for completion of the research proposed. For a detailed description of the requirements please complete the form below.

The authors should disclose all possible conflicts of interest including financial gain, personal relationships, rivalries and intellectual beliefs. In general, publications based on the project should, preferably, inform all stakeholders. Activities involved in the development of a publication will be supervised and managed by the investigator assigned to take the lead role for the specific activity involved, and this individual will be responsible for determining authorship order. It will then be up to the person who is invited by the lead investigator to indicate whether to be included. If so, prospective authors will be provided with adequate opportunity for manuscript review prior to submission. The overall PI of the award and scientific lead (Dr. Marianthi Markatou) will be informed of potential authorship agreement, and her input will be solicited before a final decision on authorship (inclusion and order) is made.

Decisions regarding inclusion/exclusion in the final authorship will be made based on current standards of authorship responsibilities (e.g., contribute significantly in the development of the proposed or additional methodology, contribute significantly to simulation designs with rationale for their selection and use, contribute significantly to the conception, design, execution, and/or analysis and interpretation of data; participate in drafting, reviewing, and/or revising the manuscript for intellectual content).  In general the guidelines of the different scientific disciplines represented must be followed, including the guidelines proposed by the International Committee of Medical Journals Editors (ICMJE).

The Publication Committee will review proposals and manuscripts within 30 days. Criteria for review include:

  • Scientific merit, technical soundness and feasibility.
  • Appropriateness for the use of preliminary data from studies related to the goals and specific aims of the project.
  • Credentials of requesting investigator(s).
  • Likelihood of successful completion of the proposed research.
  • Relationship of the proposed research and activities to projects that are already in progress.
  • Burden on other project resources.

The committee will encourage collaboration among investigators.

For interviews and press releases, prior approval by the PI is mandatory. In addition, adherence to all requirements of the home institutions and funding agencies is mandatory.
